I saw an add at Big 5 today a Mossberg 12g shotgun combo with 28" and 18.5" barrels chambered for 2 3/4" and 3". Is that a 500 or different model? I wonder if the 28" barrel is threaded for choke? It sells for $229. That a good shotgun?

While I'm at it, what's the difference between a 500 and 535?

TIA,
vega

I'm not a Mossberg expert, but I think the 535 takes the 3.5" shells and is overbored in the barrel for larger payloads.

I believe the 28" barrel does come with choke tubes also, but not 100% sure.

Sounds like an excellent deal! Wal-Mart is rather more expensive than that on their Mossberg combo's. I'd buy one just for the heck of it at that price!

Big 5 has a put mossbergs on sale about once a month. The price is lower that most independent FFL dealers can buy it wholesale.
You didn't say what you were going to use it for?

The long magazine (7+1 rounds) 20" barrel go's on sale too sometimes at the same price. That one just good for defence.

If you don't need the spare barrel sell it on ebay. I see a lot of gun parts on sale there. Remember buyer beware, same to the seller.

Vega,

DON'T BUY THAT SHOTGUN! It would likely be all the shotgun you'd ever need...and how much fun would that be?

I got that one for Christmas a couple of years ago (from Big 5). It's a fine, versatile shotgun at a tough to beat price.

Thanks for the replies. I'm not really into shotgun and that price is very tempting. The guy behind the counter said he can also get it in 20g. I know 12 is bigger than 20 but I don't know squat about the usage of these gauges.

I got the 12 guage deal. It doesn't have screw in chokes. The 20 guage, however, does have screw in chokes. I really like the shotgun. It's a good little gun.

For those who care to know, I bought the 20g combo so my kids can shoot it too. The longer barrel have modified choke tube. I should have done it weeks ago.

JShirley - Against your bette advise, I need to. ;)

Good on you Vega.

My daughter has the bantam sized 20 ga.

"Dad, why don't you go shoot your own shotguns, you're using up all my ammo !!!" :D :D

I wish we had a Big 5 around here.... or just Mossy combos for that price......sigh....

Scout:

Dunhams Sporting Goods here in the midwest appears to be almost exactly like the Big 5 chain out west. Dunham's has 2 locations in Illinois, Peoria & Jacksonville, IIRC. Don't know if either of those is close to you, but worth a look if not too far away.

FYI, the last quote I got from a gunsmith for threading a fixed choke shotgun barrel to accept screw-in chokes was $40 plus a couple of chokes at a reasonable price.

So if you thread the long barrel and get a couple of chokes (and I don't know why you'd need more than 2) you'd still be under $300 for a nice pump with 2 barrels. Still a great deal.

Foggy,

Thanks, I'm just outside of Chicago and we've got Gander Mountain, Dicks, and Wal-mart. It's not hard to find the Mossy combo's, just hard to find them at that price. I'm not near Peoria nor do I get that way that much. I'll just have to keep my eyes open. Thanks for the info.

I got the threaded choke barrel. So that makes it a better deal?

Just to stir the pot a bit, Big 5 often puts the 870HD (extended magazine) on sale at the same price.

Nothing wrong with the Mossberg though, and the extra barrel provides a lot of versatility.

I'll respond that yes, it's only a better deal if you are getting the barrel that's already threaded for choke tubes. The feature to be able to change choke tubes is an important one when you need to shoot the gun for different purposes. The choke tubes control the shot pattern at different distances (in yards).
