Biggest mistakes people make on the "big" hunt.

entropy- that cheap scope/hardware thing on a nice rifle stresses me out. I refuse to do it. I once had a clown where I worked at that wanted me to mount a Wal Mart Simmons on his new suppressed Armalite AR-10, with Tasco rings.

Yup. I had a guy that wanted to buy a Weatherby 7mm Wby. Mag. and put a Bushnell Banner on it. Talked him out of the 7mm mag, and the Banner. Put him in a Win. 94 AE and a Leupold 2-7. He wanted the Weatherby because that's what a buddy had. HE had been borrowing a Win. 94 for a couple years, hunting in woods where 75 yards was a long shot. He had 1000 set aside. The Weatherby would have barely left him enough for cheap bases, rings and that Banner, and maybe a box of shells. He spent a little over half that and got the 94AE, Leupold 2-7 VX-II, Burris Zee rings, a nice Boyt case, and 5 boxes of Fed. regular 150 gr plus two boxes of Fed. Premium Noslers to hunt with. I told him to take his wife out to a nice dinner with some of the savings. :)

I've always had my gear and myself tested and ready. I did manage to tear a heel loose from a pair of Danner boots on a Utah mountain rock slide but the super glue from my backpack held it together for the rest of the hunt.

The only bad experience I ever had was a truly bad outfitter/guide due in part to a last minute switch. The original outfitter that we had booked with tried came in and tried to salvage things on the last day of a 5 day elk hunt and offered to hunt us again for free the next season but I never wanted to give him a another chance. The costs of the outfitter/guide was only part of it. The difficulty and cost of travel and time away from work (self employed) killed it for me.

Unfortunately you are not alone. Danner has gone from a great boot to a mass produced hunk of junk. In all fairness I've had good Danners and bad ones but they are getting to be hit or miss.

Much of Danners lineup are imported from China. Their USA made boots with sewn on soles are still quite good, but priced in the $300 range. They make them on 3 different lasts made for different shaped feet. If considering a pair it would be a good idea to read up on their website to get the ones that work best for your feet, and some people simply can't make them work. While great boots, most of them simply don't fit my feet.

The USA made versions marketed toward the military are built on a last that comes closest to fitting me. I can't make any of the USA made hunting boots work. Some of their imported boots fit, but the quality just isn't there. In recent years I've found that I get a lot more quality for the money in a lower cut boot designed for backpacking.

#1: Trusting that my sleeping bag (rated to 32 degrees) would actually keep me warm with overnight temps around 42 and high humidity.

#1.5: Putting my just-about-frozen toes too close to a fire to warm them up at 0400 in the morning.

#2: When I convinced myself that a finger creek was no deeper than 6 inches. In December. At night. By myself. A mile from my truck. I gave up tracking that deer.

#3: Passing on a fox because I wanted to shoot a deer that never materialized. I still want to put a full mount of a fox on the wall and still have never had another one present itself.

#4: not getting a shot at a coyote that lunged out of nowhere after my turkey decoy because I was dumb and had my shotgun across my lap.

#5: Not taking a shot at a turkey with my recurve bow when I had practiced at that distance because I didn't want to lose a stupid $6 arrow.

#6 Ironically enough, taking my jeep in for body work (after I hit a deer) in the middle of the rut. Fast forward a few days when I was dismayed to see two mature bucks sparring at 0900 in the morning directly underneath my tree stand that I was not in at the time because I was at the stupid body shop.

Thanks for the info on the Danners- I've had the same pair since the late 90s, and used them HARD since I was issued them- lots of jumps and humps! They've even done a trip or 2 to Afg. on deployments. Yes, I was the one guy on the team with the black boots. Whenever its time for them to finally hit a dumpster I'll be shopping for another brand to replace them, or I'll just switch to my raichles- which are great boots but heavier.

I am on my 4th pair and these are bad. They are comfortable and dry, but I can feel cold air going through them when I ride my ATV. 400 gram and I can feel air movement. Time to look for something else.
