So, I need a new rangefinder that's good out to 1,400 yards or so (ideally all the way to 2,000 so I won't need to upgrade again), and I'm looking at getting a decent pair of binoculars as well.

I'm considering binos with integrated rangefinders versus 2 separate units.

What that really means is that I'm considering the following combo units, or getting a rangefinder along with some image stabilized binos from Canon.

Looking for opinions from others who've made this decision before:
  • Cheap but good enough: the Bushnell integrated units. Ranging seems decent, and optical quality is good enough, though I'd really prefer better (and non-green-tinted). Not sure on magnification.
  • Zeiss Victory rangefinding binos look solid, but they're about $2,400 to start.
  • Leica Geovids look good for around the same price as the Zeiss, but my experience with the Leica rangefinders is that the quoted ranging ability is optimistic, so I'm ruling these out unless lots of folks say they're amazing.
  • Swarovski EL Range binos. These claim to range to 1,500 yards, and based on my experience with Swaro rangefinders I believe it.

So, which of these is the way to go? Or should I get something like the Canon IS L Waterproof binoculars plus a separate rangefinding unit?

Use is mostly long-range gun-games and training classes.

I look at high end binoculars as a lifetime investment.
Not much bad can happen to them in a lifetime if you don't run over them with a truck.

I look at range-finders as consumer electronics.
A battery leak & corrosion can ruin one in a heartbeat.

Best it not happen inside my high-end binoculars!

But thats just me.

Zeiss PRF! Great little 8X rangefinder, but 1300yrds is about max on them.
Geovids are remarkable bino/rangefinders, but mine flat out would not range at very cold temps. Instructions even say to keep them warm...Haven't had cold enough weather to test out these Zeiss's yet, but have read enough on them to be confident they are not as sensitive as the Leicas.
