Bipods and tripods when hunting?

I just shoot off my pack. I'm not one that likes to carry anymore than I need and a pod fits that category.

One of the things about the Spartan Sentinel tripod that I like is that the legs are quickly and easily unscrewed and are designed to double as trekking poles. I always carry trekking poles on my pack when hiking/hunting up here so in effect the only added weight is the monopod with rotating head.

Each leg weighs 14.3oz and a single leg with the rotating head weighs 22.5oz. Not bad given the utility of the system.

I'm sure it a good system, but I'd spend half the day screwing and unscrewing stuff. Very really is a rifle not in my hands. Different strokes.

I’ve got a javelin bipod. It’s so fast to deploy and so light, it’s simply not a weight factor to bring along. I was excited about their Sentinel tripod and would love to have one. But the price point has steered me away. It’s a beautiful piece of equipment but it’s going to take me a minute to want to buy one at nearly a $1K retail, plus options I’m going to need it pretty bad before I drop the bucks.

I got lucky and was given a Sentinel by my friend Rob (shown in the earlier video). I would have a tough time justifying that kind of expense as well. Spartan's market is the Blaser/Sako buying crowd where expensive accessories are an easier sell. :p

Of course it was from the “new” breed of well healed (or high debt ratio) hunters that are heading out on $30K sheep hunts with $10K + accuracy system bolt guns is where I heard about Javelin in the first place.

I have no issue with top quality gear or the money it takes to own it. There are just some things that are more money than I’m willing to part with when “almost” as good can be had so much cheaper.

So still no real use, but just from playing with the Sentinel that @MCMXI was kind enough to send me, I could justify buying one (750ish for what I THINK the one I have is closest to)....even if it cost the new scope, or rifle I happened to want.

About the only thing I couldn't do with it comfortably would be shooting full prone. It fills the roll of trekking pole(s), crossed sticks, bipod, tripod, monopod, prod etc. Heck I came out after getting my phone, and both kids were dangling from a leg where I'd set it up for pictures. I've had rifles 12-13lbs hanging off of it at 5' high, by just the "universal" adapter that screws into a sling swivel point.
The thing fits into the quiver pocket of my badlands 2200, and I can pull it without taking off my pack. It does stick about 6" over my left shoulder tho.

I'm supposed to take a friend and his daughter hunting Saturday, so hopefully I'll get to use it....I'm saving actually writing something till after I've had a chance to do more than shoot my airgun from it.

The Javelins really bloody nice too, and one neat thing is the bottom most section of the tripod legs can be moved to the Jav, by swaping collars, to creat a sitting bipod that still only weights a few oz.

Again haven't used either but I managed to devote about 3hrs to just playing with them the last couple days.
