Evening folks

this afternoon I've been pigeon decoying, it was going great with two birds for two shots, then my gun wouldnt cock, and I had to come home :(

Taking the gun apart at home shows that a washer was stuck in the spring. Removed washer, gun now cocks fine. However I can't see where the washer comes from. Is it part of the trigger assembly, or has it just found it's way in there somehow?

Anyone recognise it? Gun is a 1977 Wingmaster.

It doesn't look like anything inside an 870 that I can think of.
They don't have washers.

Can't see enough detail in the photo, but could it possibly be a ring broken off the rim of a #209 shotgun primer?

Its difficult to take a picture close up and keep it in focus. I had a bad cartridge a few months ago, that kind of exploded slowly, as I was pumping another round to be honest, which was quite scary, I wondered if it had been a part of that.

But thats just what I wanted to hear, and why I asked on this forum, some of you guys know a hell of a lot about 870s, so thank you for your advice, you're putting my mind at rest. Obviously I dont want a part of my trigger missing, and the damn gun going off at a wrong moment :what:

Lay the washer on top of a shotgun shell and see if it is the same size as the primer rim?

To me - that looks way too wide to the rim of a 209 primer. Dunno *what* it is, but I'm pretty comfortable suggesting that it's not part of any primer.

It may be a washer that somebody installed years ago as a shim for somethingoranother.

Maybe like the brand new car with the rattle in the door.

Turns out a worker threw his empty Coke can in there before he put the door panel on!

Ha!

I just rechecked the 870 parts schematic to validate that rcmodel is correct, and (as he usually is on this sort of thing) he is right - there is no washer in the trigger group or any other area of the 870.

ok well it's looking good, it appears there's no washer in the 870 like thats at all

It is odd though, obviously the gun is over 30 years old, but I have had the trigger assembly out before, and I certainly didnt leave it in there myself!

to me it looks like the washer that goes under the trigger group screw on the Tacstar sidesaddle. Why or how it would wind up in there is anyone's guess.

Well, thanks for the advice folks, I'm off out shooting again tomorrow - on my own - so hopefully there will be no problems. Thanks again though :)

Your washer is off the right hand side of the shaft/pin that acts as the hammer pivot. On your photo you will see the recess for the washer under the right hand lifter strut. The hammer pivot pin slides thru from the left side and then the washer is slide over the shaft - then the shaft is peened to hold it in place.

Thank you very much!

edit damn I've editted this post 3 times!! I see where it has come from now thank you, it's just peened over I will give it a go :)

ok this is worthy of a new post :)

I've refitted it, just by pushing it back in, but there doesnt seem to be anything left to peen over - is it the shaft that gets peened, or the washer? There's some marks on the washer, so I'm assuming that.

The end of the shaft usualy comes with a sort of hollow center on that end leaving just the rim of the shaft to peen . Make sure the shaft is completely seated to the right, and there should be enough room to peen over the end of the shaft . (not the washer). A small sharp chisel point works well as you don't need to peen the whole rim. Just a small peen over at about every 90 degrees. Lay the chisel across the end ,and tap it to make two peen marks 180 degrees from each other across the end, then rotate 90 degrees and repeat .

Check the washer for flatness before you start , just in case it has been deformed, it may not be seating completely flush with the housing .

There is not a lot of extra shaft coming through the washer so everything has to be seated and straight to make it work. If all else fails you can buy a new pin and washer from Brownells and replace the old ones.

Thanks very much for your help on this one, in the three forums I posted this query you were the only person who knew the answer.

Very helpful - thanks again! :)
