Hi,

Been emailing a guy back and forth about a 586 he is selling.

Serial # begins with BHY and he says it is black matte. I consulted the Kull and Supica book and I'll be damned if I can figure out what the year of manufacture is.

It has a 4" barrel and looks to be in nice shape. But I have never seen a black matte in person. Is it a nice finish? Does it have the luster or is it a dull, flat finish?

Any information about the revolver will be greatly appreciated.

And what do you think is a fair price to both parties for the revolver? He is asking $550 and says it is in 95-98% condition.

Thanks

That serial number indicates it was manufactured in 1991. May not have shipped till 1992. Should be a 586-3.
There were 2500 4 inch guns with a glass bead finish listed as manufactured in 1989.
Apart from that the only matte black guns in the Standard Catalog of S&W were a 3 inch L Comp with 7 shot cylinder produced in 2000 & 2004 and a 4 inch ported 586-4 of which only 150 were manufactured.

Unless the thing is seriously buggered up, it's still a 586. I'd offer him $500, noting that's possibly not an original factory finish. However, even at $550, it's a pretty good deal.

^ This.
The 586 is a sweet shooting gun.
Poor man's Python.
And, the S&W factory target stocks fit my hand better than the Python factory target stocks.

Buy. Load. Shoot. Grin. Repeat.
You will love an N frame.
If not, I'd be shocked.

I hated them until I shot one.
I'm hooked.

The L frame is to .357 Mag what the K frame is to .38 Special.
A perfect match.

The matte black finished 586-3's were made in 4 and 6 inch barrel lengths, as a limited run in 1991 IIRC. 400 of each barrel length as I recall.

The finish proved unpopular and they were discontinued in the matte blue.

$550 would be a good deal on one as you describe. Should you decide to pass I would love to buy it. Please let me know

I like the matte finish. It's a dull finish that does not show finger prints.
