I would like to load back powder cartridges for my Springfield 1873 trapdoor. Does anyone have suggestions for optimal bullets? Conical vs. flat base, BH 5 vs BH 12? What sort of lube should I use for my cast bullets for this application? I have read quite a bit on this, but there is much disagreement. I assume that I should use LR magnum primers for Pyrodex. Any wisdom would help. Thanks. Bob

bullets

It depends on what you want to do with them. Mike Venturino makes a living writing about BPCR shooting and reloading. Google him and see what he says.

For a rifle a 500 grains flat base, for a carbine a 405 grains, good the lee HB.
Lubed with "Lyman black powder gold" or a home made recipe grease of the same consistancy, a soft lube with hot weather can contaminate the powder charge.
A cardboard wad over the powder is good.
With a drop tube you can pour up to 68 grains of FFg in a modern brass.
A good thing is to enlarge the brass mouth for all the bullet lenght with a apposite die!

I know of some who use 1-20 mix,and it's all in accuracy.Wheel weights will be ok if they are bore diameter, many trapdoors are .459,so a soft lead slug or hb will bump up.I use tc1000+ and thicken it w bees wax for warm weather.Anover powder card/wad is a very good idea, and used by many. NO JACKETED BULLETS soft steel.
