Just got a Black Powder muzzleloader Pistol, looks like one of the old dueling jobs. It's .44 Cal, do you use a wad with these as with a rifle?

I load my .45 caliber Kentucky pistol with 30 grains of Pyrodex and a .440 dia ball over a patch that in real life is a .22 caliber cotton cleaning patch lubed with Bore Butter. It is very accurate.

You can shoot conicals in them as long as you lube the bullet. Some guns like a lubed wad between the bullet and powder.
Just experiment and see what combo your pistol shoots best with.

Loading

If it is a single barreled gun, kinda like a dueling pistol, then it is most likely going to shoot best with a PRB (patched round ball).
Some shooters will put a 0.030" fiber wad over the powder before loading the PRB.
I shoot three different guns of this type...a flintlock, and two percussion guns. All are .50 caliber. Depending on what i am doing, the loads vary from 18 grs. of FFFg BP to 30 grs. of the same.

My Pedersoli Kentucky .44 cal pistol uses a .433 ball with an .010"patch. I don't use a wad with PRB but I suppose you could.

I use wads with all of my shooting and especially with a patched ball. However... with 30 grains of powder it's probably not likely you're creating enough heat for long enough time to create problems... but you know... a wad allows you to tamp the powder just so... shot to shot... and load the patch/ball without mashing it and well consistency... right..
