Black powder scopes

Do you really need a special scope for in line muzzle loaders.

I have been told that if you use a standard rifle scope that it will break the cross-hares.
 
That sounds like an urban legend to me. Any scope that is suitable for certerfire rifles should also be good for bp.
 
I have had 3 different in-line muzzle loaders in the last 8 years and have had rifle scopes on all of them. All were Leupold scopes and never a problem with any of them.
 
It's air rifles that can't take a normal rifle scope. Go ahead and scope your in-line.
 
The are product lines of muzzle loading scopes [Simmons], and some have longer eye relief much like shotgun scopes do (5 inches). The extra eye relief scopes are shorter and less powerful, but I like them better that way for hunting [for close or moving targets], and to be safe from "scope-in-the-eye"!
 
My Knight kicks a heck of a lot less than my 870. The 870 has a B&L 1.5x6 and the Knight has a Leupold 2x7. Both are great.

As above, it's an air rifle that's the problem.

Get Butler Creek flip caps. Keeps out snow, rain and dirt and protects the lenses from scratches.

You said that it was air rifles that you can not use a normal rifle scope.
At the risk of sounding foolish, why?
The only difference that I can see is the amount of recoil and the recoil on an air rifle is the opposite direction from a regular rifle.
Please explain.

Schultz, It is extactly what you just said.. The recoil from an airgun is very sharp and jarring -- and it goes back and forth like you said. Especially true with the springer-type of airguns. That is what it's been explained to me, SO.. If you mount a regular scope on an airgun, it will be destroyed in short order.
 
I sure miss my scope for my BP rifles. The great state of Texas alowed me to hunt with scopes. Here in Washington, they only allow scopes if you're disabled. I'm happy at least they allow fiber optic sights.:(
 
Wow, that really sucks!
With my nearsightedness I couldn’t hunt without the use of optics. I have 20/20 vision for distance, but I can barely see the rear sights on my muzzle loader. That’s a shame, it certainly limits the number of visually impaired shooters that can hunt with a smoke pole.
 
As posted earlier by another member, it's the type of recoil that an air rifle generates. Normal rifle scopes aren't made to withstand that type of recoil and are designed for a rearward jar. Air rifles have a back & forth jar and the forward jar tends to break the centerfire rifle scopes.
