Driving south on Interstate 79 the other day and saw a dead coyote along the side of the road. Considered varmints here and along with groundhogs can be hunted all most continuously, but I want to hunt one with my black powder revolver with a range of 25 to 30 yards its a 1860 Army.

Decoys?

Bait?

Around here a rabbit squaller to call them in or dogs to run them seems to be the way to go.
Either way 25 yards seems way shorter range than typically expected. Not that it couldn't happen but shots measured in hundreds of yards would be more typical.
He isn't called the Trixter for nothing.

Is this the proper forum??
I say sure,
After all, you're planning on shooting black powder right?

I've shot two coyotes with my .54, using PRBs, and the hides were unsellable; not that I was hide hunting, really just pulling chicken coop security, but still.....

The charge was most likely 50 grains of 3f or Pyrodex P, and the dogs were both DRT with chest shots. Ranges were 50 and 80 paces.

That's why I figured to ask you guys on the board. Their 'intelligence' is legend and with a limited range weapon I figured if there is a way to do it then you guys have "been there and done that.'

Thanks for the information guys extremely helpful. :)

I shot a mangy coyote last deer season with a .50 cal. Hawken from 75 yards. I thought that was close.
I've killed 2 with a bow but was in a tree both times. One I called in with a Kmeer Deer squeaker.
If they're not heavily harassed, you may be able to get one into pistol range.

Thanks Bob, and a Kmeer deer squeaker is the first thing on my list to get.

Is that a fawn distress call?

Lets not givem 'em a college education. If you manage your scent, and hunt with the wind, you'll be amazed how close you can call 'em in. I've literally shot them a foot from my gun barrel. Not the norm, but it can be done. I've killed many from 30 yds in.

I figure another summer of practice blasting a couple hundred balls through her will polish up those lands and grooves real good by putting holes in paper and a few cans and getting more familiar with the sight picture over certain ranges, then I'll be confident enough to hunt with her.

.......I hope!!!

Hunting and being successful are 2 different things, you are limiting your self tremendously.

I couldn't agree more FDF and I know what you mean. But, if I can't get the confidence in this revolver through practice that I need to hunt with it then I won't hunt with it :)

I am sure it can be done but the revolver is making it tough on you.
If you really want to use BP, I would go for the rifle so you are not at such a handicap.

I agree Sir, but it’s got to be with my Colt. If I can't get it with her, then I won't get it. And what's wrong with sitting out in the woods basking in the sun's rays, the sweat pouring off of you, getting stung by bugs, half eaten by ants, poisoned by ticks, thristin after some water that you forgot back in the truck and dreaming about the grass you didn't cut back home, your face and hands covered with black powder smoke after blastin some whistle pigs.

Can life get any better? :)

Lots of folks want to hunt with a pistol, but do not put forth the effort to be come proficient.

Get some practice nipples and practice dry firing, it works wonders.

While in Phoenix I over to the pistol range and watched the modern pistol shooters, it is plain frightening. Most of them could not hit the paper at 7 1/2 yards.

I carry a mouth blown call all the time when I am in the woods, it works.

Good luck.

I was a special deputy sheriff years ago and it always amazed me what terrible shots most LEOs were. Every month when we had to qualify, some would be there all day trying to get a qualifying score.

When I was in the Air Force I made friends at the small base with the 2 range guys.

I was allowed to shoot when no one was there qualifying.

One of the perks was that at the end of the quarter I was called to help reduce the inventory of ammunition left over so there was no overage.

I got to burn up .38 Special, 12 gauge and .223. Great way to spend my day.

I did learn from watching qualifying, that if I did something stupid while on base to do 2 things:

1. Based on base protocol, they had to call Headquarters and ask permission prior to un-holstering their pistol. Run like you stole it.

2. After they received permission, you were gone and they could not hit you if they had to.

My ex-sister-in-law became a Houston cop and she was really proud of her pistol shooting and would not stop about her ability. I finally got full and said, want to shoot for a case of Johnny Walker Red? My brother tried to intervene and told her you do not know whom you are playing with. She said she had placed high in her class in pistol shooting and would take the challenge.

Rules were one hand pistol shooting at 50 yards.

I received a case of scotch and he made her take the money from her pay check..
