Do they still make BlackMag3 powder? When I first got started that's what I shot. Then Cabela's either just quit carrying it or the people quit making it. That's when I changed over to Triple Seven. I was moving stuff around and came across 4 of those little flat looking, sort of square looking containers of BlackMag3. I know it's got to be over 6 years old. The best I remember it shot pretty good although I didn't have anything to compare it to....

I just found the answer. I went to <magkor.com> They have photos and all of BlackMag3.
I then clicked on 'where to buy' and it sent me to 'MDM Muzzleloaders' out of Vermont. They sell the BlackMag3.
So, they still make it. The best I remember it was a pretty hot powder. (that's not cast in stone)
I called Cabela's and asked them how come they quit carrying it but the one's I spoke with didn't know....
ADD ON--They said 'available soon'. Maybe they have just started remaking it. They said it is absolutely the cleanest burning, safest, most moisture resistant powder that one can get. They also said it will produce Magnum velocities. That part I believe for sure because like I said, I seem to remember it being pretty hot.
I'm going to stock up on some of it and give it another go.
Hell, all things being equal I may switch back from Triple Seven although it will have to be some damn clean hot burning powder to get me to do that.

I don't think that it is back in production yet it says available soon. I sent the makers of BM3 an email and they said that the powder was being used in their Thunder Charge consumable cartridges. They did say that they would be selling it again. Maybe Cabelas will pick it back up when they sell it again.

Dwave, yeah maybe. I like to trade with Cabela's.
After it come's back out I will talk to Cabela's and ask them about it. If they won't do it (They probably will though. They used to sell it when it was available) I'll see if I can make an order from MDM. They might would ship....

Did it shoot pretty clean? I asked several people about it, but I never really found anybody that used it. I am interested in getting some to try out for myself when it comes out.

Dwave, yeah, it was clean. It'll probably be even better this time around. Plus I myself will have more experience.
Dwave, lot's of time I leave my computer turned on even when I'm not using it and I stay signed into this site most of the time just as a matter of course.
I shot a '58 6 times just a little while ago. i just got through cleaning it a few minutes ago. The BlackMag3 I'vd got is over 6 years old but of course none of it has been opened until awhile ago.
I don't know if clean up was any easier than Triple Seven but it sure wasn't any harder or messier. Plenty of power. Setting up dosen't seem to have affected it from what I can remember. Those .451's tore some pretty good holes and nasty looking gouges coming out the back sides of those pieces of 2x6's.
Anyway, I do remember it's a good powder. I'vd hunted with it quite a bit.
Like I said, when it get's back on the market this time it will probably be better than I remember. I'm still a hell of a long way's from giving up my Triple Seven though. Well, time will tell....

tripple 777 is just plain to expensive out here. Dont get it you can get black powder goex for 17.00 tripple 777 is 24.99

if i want sulfurless powder. i guess i can try sugar instead of sulfur in my mix.

Scrat, be careful. With perhap's the exception of nuclear devices sugar will greatly enhance the power of any explosive material....
ADD ON--I don't know as far as adding it to gunpowder that you will fire from a piece, but there is a possibility it will sort of melt and burn and leave a residue that will be a God awful mess to clean up....

Scrat..(God! I just know I'm going to piss off a lot of people here even though I don't mean to)
I understand the feeling people have for the 'Holy Black'.
I would suggest that 777 cost's more because it is a lot better powder than Goex.
Cleaner, hotter, and stronger.
Like I said, when I first started I used the BlackMag3 because I had checked with different people here and there and everywhere and then sifted through all the information I had gathered and determined in my own mind that it was the best out there just so long as one wasn't worried about tradition. It didn't take me long to decide that a dead bear on the ground as opposed to me being in that live bear's belly, or a nice elk quartered up, or a bison rump roast served up nice and rare, or maybe an iron pot full of savory antelope stew suited me a lot better than trying to be completely traditional.
When I couldn't find BlackMag3 anymore I started searching again. This time I determined in my own mind that Triple Seven [3fff] was the next best thing so I went with it.
It's been a real good powder, Scrat. I trust it, and I don't use that word lightly.
But when BlackMag3 come's back on the market I'm going to order a good bit of it because I trust it to. I may switch back to BlackMag3 completely. It was my first choice.
I will be in Wyoming or Montana when I order it. Knowing my old ass I will probably drift on up into the Yukon again for awhile here and there. Country like that is the only place I feel really free.
I like the idea of building my own round and all. Make's me feel good, like I done something. But back up in that country I need a powder I can trust, and I wouldn't trust Goex as far as I could throw a can of it. If it came down to it I'd make my own powder before I'd shoot that s***.
Well, anyway....

Thanks GotC, I am planning on getting some when it comes back out. I still like real BP best, but I do really like 777, that stuff is nice. I am going to load up some .45 Colts with it when I get more .45 bullets.

BlackMag3 is available now but you will pay 40.00 per lb. for it. I know because I met Craig Sanborn of MDM at the Eastern Outdoor Show in Harrisburg,Pa. and he was selling it there for that very price. I have been using it for the past couple of years and I really like it, but that's getting really pricey.

mthom 1957..
Yeah, $40.00 a pound is getting on up there, but then again I don't go to the range and blow off 50 to 100 rounds either.
I don't practice much any more. I don't need to. I'vd only got a couple of gun's I turn to on a regular basis. I learned how to shoot my guns a long time ago. I might cap off one cylinder here and there but mostly mine is just for self protection and to help get me some fresh meat. I use a rifle now and then, maybe a little '49 sometimes but it dosen't use much powder anyway. It's mostly a '58 or my carbine or a Walker.
3 or 4 pounds, well, just say 5 pounds of BlackMag 3 would last me a long time.
That's only about $200.00.
That is pretty damn expensive though. I think when they get it back into full production as a loose powder for muzzle loaders, the price will come down some. Him selling it for $40.00 was probably him just making money on the side so to speak. They told me that right now it was mostly loaded into cartriges but that they were getting ready to sell the loose powder in large volume on the general market. When they start doing that they will have to drop a few dollars on their price in order to remain competitive.
Or so it would seem to me....
It is a good powder, but Triple Seven is to....

Guys, I'm shooting a new muzzleloader shotgun (Howdah Pistol) and switched to 777 for increased velocity with lead shot from the short barrel (was using AP). I get a much hotter load, but now I get major hang fires. I never had this problem with AP. Is this a problem with 777? I've never had hangfires like this.

777 has a higher ignition temperature and so is harder to ignite. Ignition is also sensitive to the amount of compression used in loading with 777. Some compression is required, but it can be overdone, which compounds the ignition problem.

I bought two bottles of Triple 7 2 weeks ago on sale for $17.99. The Goex was $12.99 on sale. Got it at Bi-Mart which is a NW chain of stores, think a 1\3rd size Wallmart. They always have something gun related on sale and I try to buy as much I can that they carry that I need. They are employee owned stores and most of the staff I see are the same people year after year. Lifetime membership is $5.00, I have been one since the mid 70's.

Ignition Problem Solved

Ok, I resolved my hangfire issues with my Howdah pistol using 777. I installed a couple of Red Hot nipples from Cabelas and problem is solved. No more missfires or hang fires. Not even for an instant, even after 12 shots with no cleaning. The touch hole in the Red Hot is bigger than the hole in the stock nipples. I have a nipple pick that will not go thru the stock nipples, but will easily go in the Red Hot with room to spare.

I have been looking for BlackMag 3 but can't find it. Is this sill on the market?
