Seen some videos on youtube in which the maker claims that blanks are being fired, but there is no visible blank firing adapter and you can see smoke exiting the barrel as if it were behind a projectile.

I always thought that it was the pressure behind the projectile that causes the gas to be forced through the gas port in the barrel and operate the action, either direct impingment or through a piston. Without a blank firing adapter, the gases go right out the end of the barrel and there is no pressure to operate the gasses... Or am I wrong here?

An AK series rifle?

If so, we had small blank adapters that screwed onto threads on the barrel, not much bigger then the barrel itself.

I have been know to cut the head off a M-16 round and knock out the fired primer, fitted it to go under the flash suppressor. Works fairly well.
