I’m searching for a blaze orange camo vest to wear on public land when still hunting.
I have a plain orange vest which works but it is basically a piece of nylon that goes over my head….
Ideally I would like it made out of polar fleece material with a camo background to help break up outline.
something light and not too bulky.
there was one that would be perfect but it is no longer made and I haven’t found it on EBay or any similar site. it was on Bob Ward’s and was “the world famous orange camouflage fleece vest.”
I could get away with just a hat but on public I’m making sure I’m advertising to the Trigger happy “if it’s brown, it’s down” Joe Hunters out there.
If you wear orange camo, what do you wear?
Where did you get it?
Is it still available?
What say you?
Thanks in advance!

In Colorado camouflage blaze orange doesn’t meet the requirements during big game seasons, has to be 500 square inches of solid orange or pink. Nylon is to noisy, I have a reversible fleece vest, blaze orange/real tree, that slips over whatever I’m wearing, is quite, helps keep core warm & doesn’t restrict upper body movement like a coat or parka.

HUNTER ORANGE & PINK
HUNTERS MUST WEAR FLUORESCENT ORANGE OR PINK DURING CERTAIN HUNTING SEASONS. The law requires hunters to wear at least 500 square inches of solid daylight fluorescent orange or fluorescent pink material on an outer garment above the waist while hunting deer, elk, pronghorn, moose or bear with any firearm license. A fluorescent orange or pink hat or head covering, visible from all directions, is also required. Camouflage orange or pink does not qualify. Mesh garments are legal but not recommended. This includes all muzzleloader hunters. It also includes archery hunters who hunt during rifle seasons.
Archers hunting during the limited Sept. rifle bear season, archers with an archery bear, deer, elk, pronghorn or moose license, and archers licensed for private land hunting through the Ranching for Wildlife program do not have to wear fluorescent orange or pink, but should consider wearing it to increase safety while in the field. Auction- and raffle-license holders do not have to wear orange or pink when hunting with archery equipment when no rifle sea- sons are open. If using a ground blind or pop-up blind, hunters should display orange or pink that is visible from all directions on the outside of the blind.
CPW RECOMMENDS WEARING FLUORESCENT ORANGE OR PINK CLOTHES IN THE FIELD, EVEN IF NOT HUNTING. Archery deer, elk, moose and bear hunters are encour- aged to wear hunter orange or pink during the overlapping archery and muzzleloader seasons to help address safety concerns. Wearing orange or pink is for hunter safety, as big-game animals don’t see these colors like we do: Movement, sound and smell are what give hunters away.

I used to wear an orange camo vest for gun season when I lived in Ohio. Got it so long ago that I don't remember where. Just a basic, thin fleece sort of material with a pocket on each and a zipper. Lot's of options if you do an internet search. Orange isn't required where I live and hunt now so it's been retired, unless I do a hunt out of state some time.

Normally I wear an old Cabela's fleece vest that's quiet and simple because I'm wearing a pack.

For drives and still hunting I invested in one of these with several pockets a few years ago. A blaze orange take-off of the military Molle LBV:

The intent was to carry some of the same chit I normally carry, but in the vest. It's also got a hydration bladder pocket. I only mounted the medium pockets on it. On the back I run a couple compression straps so I can strap in my jacket when not wearing it. I can also carry my BogPod small tripod by strapping it on the rear. It worked pretty well when we're doing drives on smaller pockets of walk-in areas. Basically, get out of the truck and slip it on, and you've got all your chit.

It's not the quietest rig, but it's not that noisy either.

500 square inches!? That is double what KS requires; an orange hat and 100 sq inches both front and back. Orange camo is legal here, as long as it meets the requirements.

The kids school colors were orange and blue, so one of them had a blaze orange under armor backpack. I confiscated it after the school year and it became my hunting pack. It would suffice for minimum orange in².

Pro tip:

Get a couple of those cheap vinyl orange vests to put in your pack. They come in handy if you forget your good orange outerwear. Also, you can staple one to a tree about chest high to keep other hunters away from your area....;)

I do wear an orange camo vest. It's pretty long, and with the number of pockets it has (including the large one on the back) it looks like an orange camo photographer's vest. It's made out of some kind of heavy cotton though - not polar fleece. There's a lot of cockle burrs in some of the places we hunt, and fleece is a magnet for those darned things.
Where did you get it?
I had a loving mom who was a wizard with a sewing machine. She heard me saying once that I would love to find a photographer's vest in orange camo. It showed up in the mail just before my birthday about 20 years back. :)
Is it still available?
Sorry, no. Mom passed in 2016. And my irreplaceable hunting vest is starting to show signs of wear.:(

On a garment the size of a vest, any camo effect is negligible. Blaze orange is grey to a deer, and does not stand out to them as it does to humans. Your other clothing would probably stand out more than a solid orange vest.

Why not get a solid blaze orange vest, if you can't find a camo one, and spray paint a pattern with black spray paint or do the old "tie dye" method

Just Googled blaze camo vest and many options came up.
I thought this LL Bean looked nice.

You can find cheaper versions, but I have one of these from LL Bean. It is by far the best vest I've ever used. Well worth the $35 or $40 price. They have solid, and camo blaze. Just be aware camo isn't legal in most places. And IMO isn't a good idea anywhere.

I’ve seen this one and had considered it but not sure if was good.
It’s probably what I’ll get.
Thank you for your replies!

I live in NY and I could get by with just a hat legally from how I read the requirements.

“Fluorescent Orange & Fluorescent Pink Clothing Requirements
New: Any person hunting deer or bear with a firearm or a person who is accompanying someone hunting deer or bear with a firearm shall wear:

  1. a minimum total of two hundred fifty square inches of solid fluorescent orange or fluorescent pink material worn above the waist and visible from all directions; or
  2. a minimum total of two hundred fifty square inches of patterned fluorescent orange or fluorescent pink consisting of no less than fifty percent fluorescent orange or fluorescent pink worn above the waist and visible from all directions; or
  3. a hat or cap with no less than fifty percent of the exterior consisting of solid fluorescent orange or fluorescent pink material and visible from all directions.”
