Boar Huntin with Knives

Hey yall, I know it's been awhile since I last posted. In fact it was mid way through VA Huntin season. But I've been really active in another forum (www.smpost.net) I'd really suggest checkin it out if yer a dipper. But as I said I have been really active (436 posts and I joined Dec. 12th, pretty good eh?) in the other forum. But now onto my "return topic" I was just wonderin if anyone has ever participated in a hog hunt with A KNIFE! If so post a story bout it in here because I'm really interested in it.
 
I have seen it done mostly with dogs. The dogs hold the hog whil you pick up the back legs and stab it.
I have also seen a guy go after one with a spear, then hack on it with a old style hatchet and followed with a 12 inch blade knife.
 
I have watched the younger and dumber guys fiigh to see who gets to go in to get the hog. To cut it if a boar and needs to be, or to catch it if big enough to sell to some canned hunt club for the worthless shooter. Or just because it seemed like the right thing to do at the time. They hunt with knives ,spears. God must watch over the stupid and ignorant as i am still alive but i do draw the line at stick'n a knife in one unless it's died first. I shoot first but have used a rubberband to casterate them while the dog has the front end under control,,,years ago.
 
my buddy in maui hawaii knows some locals that pig hunt, they hunt on private land and the rules are no firearms, dogs run em down in the pineapple fields and only takes a second with the knife to the throat, a little brutal for me, Id rather shoot em, instead of cut and run for a palm tree. cuz if that mother gets loose you gonna be in pain brah, good roasted tenderloin tho.

How exactly is shooting an animal less brutal than slitting its throat or stabbing it in the heart? Seriously, that is similar logic to what is employed (or not employed) anti hunters that chow down on commercialy raised and slaughtered meat.

Id rather shoot em, instead of cut and run for a palm tree. cuz if that mother gets loose you gonna be in pain brah

I good reliable dog or two is of great importance but once you have the thing legged it is not going anywhere. A legged hog is pretty helpless.
 
I have a friend born and raised in Hawaii. I ruined him for knife hunting when I introduced him to firearms here in the lower 48. He told me they'd get up in a tree above a trail. Two knives. When the dogs chased a hog past he would drop on the hogs back at the same time stabbing it through from the top down between the shoulders. That would paralyze it. Then with your 2nd knife reach over and cut it's throat. Said it was "good fun".
 
I've seen it done, I'm not game. Of about a dozen I've seen, the guys always end up bleeding themselves. A couple had some nice gashes and one a hole through his hand. This has to be right between crazy and stupid if it were to be on a scale/chart. But the guys did have fun.
 
I might have to give it a try. I'd rather use a gun, but I know guys that hunt hogs with dogs and knives only. I don't think they would allow me to shoot toward their dogs.
 
Girodin, I can see where somebody might think a rifle shot is a quicker and cleaner kill than via the use of a knife...

A head shot perhaps but it is far from reasonable to believe that all pigs are shot in the head. I have seen them stuck, seen them slit and seen them shot. A hog shot in the heart is not too different from one stuck in the heart with a knife. I will also say that shooting leaves open the posibility of a poor shot. I know here on the interwebs everyone is an ace and every shot is placed perfectly and every animal is DRT upon being shot and often with minimal calibers to boot. The real world is another matter. A sticking a pig is much less brutal than gut shoting one.

Folks are of course entitled to their opinions but there has been a fair amount of silly moral superioty claimed by those that seem to think shooting a pig over bait from very far away is more sporting than hunting with dogs and a knife.

Interesting. I dont know anyone that has stabbed themself pig hunting. I have no reason to believe it is very common. Idiots can manage to hurt themselves doing all sorts of things. Falling out of a tree stand for example. Honestly I think much of the "craziness" and danger is blown out of proportion given solid dogs.

It is a different style of hunting and I can see it not being some peoples cup of tea. They shouldn't kid themselves that it is so muh more brutal than other commonly accepted methods of hunting.

I don't think they would allow me to shoot toward their dogs.

Ya, I know of several people who do not even allow guns on a hunt. Attempting to shoot when a catch dog has caught seems like a really really bad idea to me. One that has very high odds of producing undesired results.
 
Yeah I have stabbed a few hogs in the last couple of years. It is far less dangerous than most people would like to believe, with good dogs. I would think that a knife to the heart of a hog would be less brutal than a gun shot to the heart. I have done both and the ones that were shot made it a bit further than the hog we had on the ground with a knife wound directly to the heart. I would not hog dog with anybody who carried a gun. If you feel the need for a gun, during this type of hunt then you need some better dogs and more training.

Hunting is hunting, killing is killing, it is what it is.

I have wanted to hunt hog from horseback with short lances, but I have yet to have the opportunity. That's the classic method.

Now you have my attention. I have participated in cavalry games (carbine, saber, pistols, lance) and the lance is the hardest to master. Some people do well with it, look good, and are naturals to working with a lance. Not me.
I would think that a short lance would be more dangerous then a 9' lance to the rider and horse as as you might get hung up on the thing.
 
Well, I have no shame in claiming a yellow racing stripe. For me, close combat is a .30-'06 at 400 yards or so. :D I regard my bodily parts as being extremely precious--even if I did do reasonably well in car racing.

Anything bigger than I am with teeth or tushes, hey, I'm not into any sort of physical intimacy.
 
I think hog hunting with a knive is for the young and dumd. The way you grow old around hogs is to smart'n up with time as you do slow down with age. I to have cut or rubberbanded hogs nuts when younger to help control and to make a less gamey hog but not as i have grown older. Now i will just shoot them. Not in the head. In the shoulders or heart area and if they bleed out then thats ok too. I use to use a 357 with hard cast 180 gr bullets and it would break both shoulders and bore a nice clean hole with out much damage.Them darn knives can cut them and you and those cutters on hogs got that name for a reason. There have been hunters killed when a hog got the upper hand on a lone hunter. Not often but does happen. Ask around he Perry fl area if it ain't true.
 
My advice...

Don't video tape you knifing the hog with a Megadeath play over and post it on youtube.

Personally I view it as a high Risk, low reward...
 
I've done it, guy in a nearby town, friend of a friend, had dogs and hunted for a couple of big rice farmers at night. No guns, just knives. It's not THAT dangerous with good dogs and it's no more "inhumane" than bow hunting IMHO. It is a blood sport, so if you have a weak stomach, have the slaughter house clean your game, can't stand blood, maybe you'd better stay home. You stick 'em in the throat and slice the carotid and they go down pretty quick. It is an athletic pursuit and I'm getting to the age I don't like chasing dogs through rice fields. That's more work than shootin' 'em in a trap. :D

Ya know, I've had 'em flop around for 30 seconds in the trap shooting 'em in the head with a 255 grain flat point from a .45 Colt. I've seen 'em fall quicker with a cut throat. Dead is dead. I don't really care how I kill 'em, tell ya the truth, stab or shoot. The end result is pork in the pot. Farmers didn't care how we killed 'em, either, so long as they weren't trompin' down their rice. Do you think rat traps are cruel? Vermin, ya know. Hogs are just tasty vermin down here far as the farmers are concerned.
