I have one of these babies. It's great except my only concern is hammer snag, so instead of getting a 642, I'm thinking about bobbing that hammer. I also want it bobbed in such a way that I can still cock it for single action.

Does anyone know who can do this for me?

Thanks.

Any 'smith competent enough to turn the shop lights on before working...:D

I did my J frame, masked around the hammer, trimmed off the spur leaving just enough checkering to get a thumb on, filed the rough corners round and smooth. It works quite well. YMMV:what:

That particuler style of hammer spur doesn't lend itself to "bobbing." If you leave enough of the spur so that it can be safely thumb-cocked you'll have enough to still snag. I suggest that you consider selling it, or trading it for one of S&W's Bodyguard models in the "-38" or "-40" series.

Another alternative is to use a holster with a hammer shroud and cover the hammer with your thumb during the first part of the draw and presentation.

Another possibility is to switch out the hammer for one of the kind used in the models 38 and 40 that have a small non-snag hammer spur. This worked in older guns that the firing pin mounted on the hammer. I don't know about the current revolvers though.

Remember the old "mass x velocity" so beloved when talking about bullet energy and gun recoil? Well, it applies to other things as well, like a hammer having enough energy to punch a primer.

One problem with bobbing the hammer on a J frame is that the hammer is about as light as it can be and still fire the round reliably. This is made worse if the gun is also given a "trigger job" which involves lightening the mainspring. I have seen several such returned to their owners after this kind of work that would fire only 2-3 rounds in a cylinder, sometimes none.

You should have picked up one of those shrouded ones. Enough of the hammer to cock for SA, but it will not snag since only the checkered part is outside of the shroud. Easiest way for both SA and DA. That is the type my wife wants to get. I've only seen two models from Taurus and two from S&W.
