Dear Friends,

CeaseFire Maryland is holding its Annual Fundraiser and Silent Auction on Thursday, January 6th, 2005 from 7-9 pm at the Kentlands Mansion in Gaithersburg, Maryland. The invitation is below. Our special guests include Congressman Chris Van Hollen from Maryland's 8th District, Montgomery County Executive Doug Duncan and Baltimore Mayor Martin O'Malley. The event will benefit our efforts to educate Marylanders about the need for a ban on military-style assault rifles. Maryland has banned assault pistols since 1994 and we need to add their `big brothers', assault rifles.

And thanks to President Bush's failure to act, the weak 1994 federal assault weapons ban expired on September 13th. This was despite the fact that 76% of Americans supported renewal of the ban or 159 million voting-age Americans! And 77% of Marylanders supported not only renewing the federal ban, but also closing the loopholes to stop the gun industry from making copycat assault rifles such as the Bushmaster, used in the DC-area sniper murders.

If so many people supported this common-sense measure, why was it allowed to expire? Because the NRA has only 3.4 million members, but spent $11 million in the past two years lobbying Congress. The NRA actively campaigns against legislators who oppose their positions. Advocates for sensible gun laws are out-funded and out-organized - believing common sense will prevail. Apparently it won't!

What can we do?

STAND UP AND BE COUNTED! Join CeaseFire Maryland to show our legislators that we will support their decisions to stand up for sensible gun laws.

HELP MARYLAND LEAD THE WAY in keeping assault weapons off our streets and protecting our police and citizens. Since 1986, CeaseFire Maryland has been advocating for the citizens of Maryland and passed an assault pistols ban in 1994. But we need to extend that ban to assault rifles and we need your help to do it.

WHEN? NOW!! Please come to our Fundraiser and Silent Auction on January 6th, 2005 and support this important issue. And if you can't come, please get out your checkbooks - EVERY dollar matters!

Visit www.ceasefiremd.org for more details and the list of gun safety achievements in Maryland. And THANK YOU!

So Gail Gunn, er I mean Leah Barrett is back in the news again. It's good thing that her so-called grassroots effort pays her $32,000 a year so that her and the "regular ol' concerned citizens of Maryland" can get together at a mansion for a little pow wow. Elitist snobs....

They have even less chance of getting a bill through this year than they did last. They've lost one vote on the judicial proceedings committee and the swing vote has committed to going our way.

Get over it Gail and Rob....

I am 100% serious when I say that I am thankful everyday that I live here in Indiana and not the dozen or so states full of those types of people. :banghead:

Because the NRA has only 3.4 million members, but spent $11 million in the past two years lobbying Congress.
and where do they think they got that $11 million from? Or are NRA members, who are willing to put their money where their poll answers are, not everyday enough for them?
The NRA actively campaigns against legislators who oppose their positions.
just like the brady bunch does and cease-fire MD would if they had enough members who actually cared about their "cause"
Advocates for sensible gun laws are out-funded and out-organized
and, most importantly, out-numbered. thank God.

maybe we could gather up some stuff for their silent auction

Hyponex makes a nice bag of BS

Just exactly how dangerous is Maryland anyway? How many "assault pistols" and "assault rifles" are used in crimes? How many police officers are killed by these weapons in Maryland? It sounds like a bunch of nonsense fabricated to scare citizens in to believing that garbage. It always seems to amaze me that the "assault" gun grabbers always try to use the old "to protect or police" and "for the children" crap to convince soccer moms that these guns need to be banned, when most people never actually even see that sort of violence unless its in a movie. I guess if you watch enough John Woo movies you will believe anything :banghead: :(

So, I'm wondering if there is a lpublic sidewalk in front of the mansion, where we can walk with signs  . I'm guessing that since this is in monkey county, we would need a permit to just look a this place, right?

last winter they had their fund raiser at Mz Barretts home

i think the new venue is due to some of the uninvited guests last year

I think that Gail Gunn/Leah Barrett is the best friend that we have. As the shrill leader of this misguided group she does more to damage CeaseFire than we ever could. Maybe we can get her to show her true self this year like she did at last year's hearings on the MDAWB.

Rally the troops

Last year we had outrageously impressive turnouts for meetings of the judicial committee in Annapolis when gun issues were discussed. If we can do the same this year (dare I say improve on what we did last year?), we can show them that the tide is turning in the PRMD as well as in the rest of the country. I think the anti-'family protection' zealots were shocked by our presence, numbers, appearance, and quality of testimony. Even if you do not want to testify, throw on your Sunday Best (yeah, and guys, inlcude that tie, too: the fact that there were hundreds of us there in our 'Sunday Go TO MEETIN' clothes, and not in camo, just ate them up - Leah could barely stand it) and come on out and watch the show, orr, come on out and testify.

Just exactly how dangerous is Maryland anyway?

Crime is rampant in the D.C. suburban county of Prince george's, MD. Pretty high in Montgomery County (where this "do" is being held) as well.

The only illegal use of a so-called "assault weapon" in memory was that of the "beltway snipers" two years ago. Those BGs ignored borders and MD bans on "AWs" and did their heinous crimes wherever their moods took them in Maryland, Virginia, and the District. Imagine that.

yah know, this old shill about needing to get rid of the assault weapons reminds me of the story about the kid in NYC who walked around everywhere with a big medallion on a chain around his neck.

If you asked him what it was, he said it was his Anti-Tiger Amulet. It had magical powers to keep tigers away from him and thus kept him safe.

If you pointed out to him that it was unnecessary because there are no tigers roaming the streets of NYC, he'd beam and reply "see how well it works?"

Homer: "Not a bear in sight. The Bear Patrol must be working like a charm!"
Lisa: "That's specious reasoning, Dad."
Homer: "Thank you, dear."
Lisa: "By your logic I could claim that this rock keeps tigers away."
Homer: "Oh, how does it work?"
Lisa: "It doesn't work."
Homer: "Uh-huh."
Lisa: "It's just a stupid rock."
Homer: "Uh-huh."
Lisa: "But I don't see any tigers around, do you?"
Homer: "Lisa, I want to buy your rock."

They need to hire someone to spell check their work. Under state leg. subfolder they have assault Riffles. Must be someone running around DC with a Riffle ball bat smacking people in the shins lol

The reporter from the monkey county Gazette that wrote all the articles on the MC MMMs attempt to shut down the Gaithersburg gunshow, is now on the board of Ceasefire MD.

Ex county council President, Blair Ewing is also on the board

Their support is a facade and our sides turn out in Annapolis last year was noticed. Despite all of their "legislative training" sessions, they had no grassroots support there. Leah Gunn Barrett going screechy hostile on Vallario was a major blunder. Vallario maybe no friend of gun owners, but he is in charge of his committee. Leah can obviously be rattled into non relevance.

Harry Tuttle...exactly, it is all a house of cards. Once you see the JHU and Monkey County inbred relationships between all of these anti-gunners, you realize that with due vigilance on our part, we might have a chance in turning this place around.

I live within 5 minutes of this place....

Counterprotest? I think it is definetely possible (and legal) but I would not be surprised if there was police/Kentlands security harassment.

I can't be there for the protest....I have a professional engagement that evening but I will volunteer Spot77 as my proxy

Funny how they scheduled this right about the time that the general assembly is starting up, huh.....

I'm up for a protest rally. How bout it Spot? :D I'm sure we'll have to hash out a few details, but I'm game if anyone else is. :neener: :D

I can hear it now,"Why,why, look at those people on the sidewalk, and there are even blacks in that group! Thats strange, I thought all blacks were part of the democratic party! Somebody call security! THOSE people are not supposed to be out there!"
