Dear Friends,
CeaseFire Maryland is holding its Annual Fundraiser and Silent Auction on Thursday, January 6th, 2005 from 7-9 pm at the Kentlands Mansion in Gaithersburg, Maryland. The invitation is below. Our special guests include Congressman Chris Van Hollen from Maryland's 8th District, Montgomery County Executive Doug Duncan and Baltimore Mayor Martin O'Malley. The event will benefit our efforts to educate Marylanders about the need for a ban on military-style assault rifles. Maryland has banned assault pistols since 1994 and we need to add their `big brothers', assault rifles.
And thanks to President Bush's failure to act, the weak 1994 federal assault weapons ban expired on September 13th. This was despite the fact that 76% of Americans supported renewal of the ban or 159 million voting-age Americans! And 77% of Marylanders supported not only renewing the federal ban, but also closing the loopholes to stop the gun industry from making copycat assault rifles such as the Bushmaster, used in the DC-area sniper murders.
If so many people supported this common-sense measure, why was it allowed to expire? Because the NRA has only 3.4 million members, but spent $11 million in the past two years lobbying Congress. The NRA actively campaigns against legislators who oppose their positions. Advocates for sensible gun laws are out-funded and out-organized - believing common sense will prevail. Apparently it won't!
What can we do?
STAND UP AND BE COUNTED! Join CeaseFire Maryland to show our legislators that we will support their decisions to stand up for sensible gun laws.
HELP MARYLAND LEAD THE WAY in keeping assault weapons off our streets and protecting our police and citizens. Since 1986, CeaseFire Maryland has been advocating for the citizens of Maryland and passed an assault pistols ban in 1994. But we need to extend that ban to assault rifles and we need your help to do it.
WHEN? NOW!! Please come to our Fundraiser and Silent Auction on January 6th, 2005 and support this important issue. And if you can't come, please get out your checkbooks - EVERY dollar matters!
