Hey all, I'm thinking about taking advantage of my soon to expire Amazon Prime trial and get a smaller fixed blade knife, and one of the ones I'm looking at is the Boker Plus Vox Rhino, they look very much my speed and I believe there is a place in my life for that knife.

My question is, leather and stag or micarta and Kydex? I imagine I'll like the Kydex sheath a little better, but how is the retention and everything on the leather sheathed Boker knives like this one? How close to the body do they respectively hold it? I'll have a Tek-Lock for the Kydex one.

I do like the idea of carrying the stag and leather version visibly a little better, just because the stag handle alone will probably reduce the side eye from people who don't like even small knives in public.

I'm a fan of stag, but I think the Vox Rhino looks better with the micarta.

You can always buy one of the leather sheaths.

Grip wise how does micarta feel compared to stag? For such a small knife I think traction and grip feel are huge

Alright so I sprung for a Micarta/Kydex version, and I love it. The reviews said the leather sheath that comes with the stag handled Rhino was less than best, some said it was a sloppy fit even. The Kydex was crazy tight when I got it, but after a few days I've had time to pop it in and out enough that I've gotten used to the way it draws and the sheath is starting to break in. It still holds the knife securely enough that I've got no concerns at all about carrying it around my neck.

It is very small, but it has great ergonomics and feels very substantial. The thick, curved spine of the knife feels like it will allow a number of good, choked-up holds on the thing. I'll be testing it on some mangoes later tonight, and I'll try to get some photos up.

I'm happy with the Boker Plus knives I've seen, they appear to have prioritized their craftsmanship budget very well when they came up with the two I have.

When the stag/leather Rhino became available from AG Russell, I ordered one - and a Micarta/Kydex Gnome. I think I haphazzardly got it right! The smaller Gnome feels better, I feel, in Micarta than that little of a piece of stag would. And it's standard sheath is the way to go for a neck knife. I've had no complaints on the Rhino's leather sheath - including it's retention. But, in fairness, I haven't tried to wear either one out, mainly due to their uneven edge grinds. The QC & fit/finish belies their low cost - the PRC-made knives are of decent construction, falling short only in the edge grind - an all too common complaint in general these days.
