So i just got a new mag for my discontinued glenfield\marlin model 25. It doesnt work. when i insert the magazine there is no audible click like my old mag. with the magazine in, cycling the bolt causes the mag to fall out. I have compared both mags and cant find a difference. need help thanks. Also is there a basic book on sighting in a scope? or if you know how let me know

the notch/cutout in the back of the mag, has to be in the exact same spot, eith from the top of the mag(measure it, don't eyeball) or from the bottom.

sighting in a scope/gun

ok, to sight in a scope/gun combo heres what ya gotta do:

1. mount the scope on the rifle usung the proper base and rings, tighten well.

2. go out and buy several small 50 round boxes of ammo from different manufacturers.. however, AVOID Remington, they are worthless for rimfire! i highly recommend CCI ammo, Next is Winchester, then Federal. CCI mini-mag hollow points are accurate in most of my rifles and pistols.

3. get some targets with light colors for the center markings, like orange. if you buy a target with black highlights it will be hard to see the holes the bullets make.

4. go to the range, you will need various ammo, screw driver to turn the adjustment nobs, good spotting scope or binoculars to check impacts. also a small seat of some kind if the range doesnt have chairs. you will need a rest, i make mine out of old jeans filled with cracked walnut shells. you can find that anywhere they sell reloading supplies, its used in tumblers to clean used ammo casings. also, dont forget hearing protection.

5. first , set the targets out to about 15 yards from the bench to get the rifle to print on the target. then set up the gun, take the caps off the scope adjustment nobs, and fire one shot, look for hole in the target. adjust for height and or left/right if needed. just shoot one round at a time and adjust as you go, you will be "walking" the point of impact toward the center of the target.

6. when you get it near the center (doesnt have to be perfect) then move the target out to 25 yards and repeat the "walking" of the point of impact excercise. when thats done, if you wish to sight it in at 50 yards, repeat the process again at 50 yards.

7. when the scope is zeroed at the yardage you need and is getting the smallest groups you can get, you must now clean the barrel and allow it to cool.

8. now you must check your guns performance with several different brands of ammo. with several new targets, aim for the center of one of the targets that is labeled with the name of the ammo used on that target. at this point the scope/gun does not need to be rezeroed for each brand of ammo, all you are doing is shooting for groups. use a diffent target for each type of ammo. aim at the center of each target and shoot a 5 round group. repeat this with each different box of ammo. let the gun cool and be cleaned between each selection of ammo. your groups may not be dead center, but they will group. choose the tightest group of the bunch and then fine tune the scope to the center of the target.

9. you now have an ultimate shooter, rifle /scope/ammo combination that will drive tacks at the distance you want to shoot. after the shooting and sighting in is done, go out and buy as much of that ammo as you possibly can afford and enjoy your shooting/hunting time!

FURTHER RECOMMENDATIONS:

-if you are hunting with this and its a rimfire .22, your best bet is using a hollow point bullet design of the high velocity kind. it makes quick, clean kills on a regular basis.

- my recommendation is a at least a 4 power with a 40 mm objective lens. the power will increase accuracy and the 40 mm Objective lens will gather more light in low-light conditions.

- I also really love the Butler creek flip open scope lens covers to protect my lenses from water, debris, and smudges. its easier to get the lens covers before you mount the scope on the gun, that way you can take just the scope into the store to fit many of them on untill the right size is found.

- i have a neoprene rifle stock sleeve from BEAR CREEK accessories that has a velcro pocket on it. in the pocket is a lens cleaning cloth and a small bottle of visine for my eyes.

Best of luck -Eric

Federal 22 LR (blue box) shoot well out of my Savage Bolt Action and can be found on sale all the time. Remington Thunderbolt ammo isn't bad for plinking and Remington Yellow Jacket isn't bad for hunting. All that being said, CCI Stinger ammo is the best .22 LR ammo I have found for hunting. It's more expensive but shoots fast and flat.

RE: that lesson on sighting in a scope.....

What about taking the bolt out, looking down the barrel and getting the scope mounted as close to zero as possible before screwing with the windage and elevation dials? And 15 yards is nothing, just start at 50. If someone can't at least hit paper at 50 with a rifle they need a new hobby. I bore sighted my .204 at 50 yards no problem.

I am in the corps and shoot the m16 i figured sighting in a scope was kinda like adjusting for windage and elevation. thanks for the info. i went shooting and i know it shoots low an inch and 1 inch right. i shot at an indor 25yd range. i figure i want it at sighted in at 100yd so sighting it in at 25 would cause low impact at 50 or 100? I dont want to make myself look stupid but i thought the caps on the scope were the adjustament nobs and wondered why i couldnt adjust the impact of the round. then i took one off and slapped myself. i figure that should let you know what my knolladge base is. thanks for all the help

I have a Marlin 25 that I bought replacement magazines for. Take out the bolt and see what is interfering with the magazine locking up. I had to use a needle file to remove a small amount of material from the magazineto get mine to lock up properly.

thanks

thanks for the help i got the mag to click this afternoon. i measured the exact plae in my old mag that had a file mark and duplicated it on my new mag. i got the click i was hoping for and i believe that i have fixed it i will let you know what happens when i go to the range.
