Been looking around for a Win 54 or Rem 788 Bolt action 30-30.
Seen very very few and the prices were atrocious. Had a Savage 340 at one time but it blew up on me. Never did feed without a minor jam. Anyone seen any around?

Curiosity compels me to ask why you'd want to replace a malfunctioning / self disassembling rifle in a rare/unique caliber and action combination?

Keep an eye on the pawn shops they pop up from time to time. I had a savage that was a very nice rifle and shot well. Most folks think of a lever action but a good many were bolt guns that give you a better selection of ammo in .308 caliber.

I think the caste bullet benchrest guys absorbed all the .30-30 chambered 788s years ago.

Funny, I remember a 788 in .30-30 standing ignored in the rack at my local K-Mart for three or four years when I was a highschool teen in the early 70s. But, $79.99 was a bunch of money.

Man, I wish I had bought it though.

The cool rifle to have was a Remington Model 742 in .30-06. So, I paid 140 hard earned dollars for a used 742 Carbine with a Weaver K-2.5 on it when I was 17 years old. It was in like new condition. At least I was a little different from the norm at the local management area hunts. All of those dudes had to have the syrupy finished 742 BDL rifle with the basket weaved stock and a 3-9 Redfield Widefield scope. :barf:

Killed my first two bucks with that Woodsmaster Carbine. Everybody thought the Woodsmasters were hokey a couple of decades later. :)

Yep, by then you had to have a Remington 700 BDL in 7mm Remington Magnum. These little 100 pound Alabama Whitetails take alot of killin.
