Marlin went to a 20" twist in 1999, although one article says there were still 38" in the system.
Main limit on a lever action is OAL, the .444 and .45-70 are on a bunged out .30-30 action, not a true 1895.
 
Gets me thinking too, any affordable options for a 444 single shot? I assume not, I know the Ruger No.3 might work but they are almost unobtainium

There were lots made in the final years of H&R, after purchase by Marlin. Can’t recall the twist rate but it’s tighter than the original and mine throws 325 gr lead soup cans rather well. Would love a Ruger in 444!
