Hey guys I have a JC Higgins bolt action 12. It was my first shot gun, I don't want to sell it. The gun is in very good shape it has Sears & Roebuck stamped on it. I've never seen another one like it, does anyone know anything about them. Any info would help.

Not with out more information. Is there a model number on it, it would look something like 510.20 or similar or perhaps even a model name on it. Sears sold a lot of shotguns from a lot of makers. Mossberg, High Standard and so on.

I think that those J.C. Higgins 12 gauge shotguns were recalled 15 or more years ago due to a possible defective bolt.

If I remember correctly, you can still send the bolt only into Sears and they will send you a pretty decent sum of money for it. I think it was about $150 you would get.

Do a Google search on the recall and you'll probably find it.

The guns are nothing special. They are (or were) very common and in very little demand. I had one in 16 gauge which I bought used years ago for $30 and sold it a couple years ago for about $95 if I remember correctly.

Thanks for the info guys. I did find Mod. # 583.10, and I will look into the recall just the hell of it but I'm not sending the bolt in. That gun was retired long ago.
Thanks agian!

The info that I read says it is a High Standard. Subsequent models afterwards, were made by H&R for High Standard for sale through Sears.

I have my father's 12 gauge that was part of the recall and another in 20 gauge that is not a recall gun. I have no intention to send in the bolt.
I've used these shotguns for years with no problems; succesful with pheasant, turkey etc. The wife loves to shoot the 20- it fits her perfectly.
As you can see by the above article link, the recall was caused by someone who was using a gun with a missing/stripped bolt stop screw. We all know what happens when lawyers get involved, and in this case, Sears thought it prudent to declare the gun unsafe. They actually are fine as long as all the parts are there and in good condition (like any other gun). It was CYA by Sears all the way.
The value of these guns is poor to say the least, especially the ones covered in the recall. They have nice wood and are generally good funtional shotguns.
