Book Discussion: "Deer Hunting With Jesus"

I grew up a very "conservative" kid in mostly insulated "conservative" communities. My life experience has been such that I have shifted "left" on many issues. Gun ownership is not one.

I consider myself an ardent supporter of RKBA...but I also am in favor of progressive political changes.

...so call me a liberal.

That being said, Joe Baegent is a brilliant writer and his analysis (IMHO) of the "mutt people" (as he likes to call his ancestors) is spot on. I have had long talks with folks who are true party-line Democrats about how big of a mistake they have made in regards to private gun ownership. They could, and would, run the table if they truly abandoned it as part of their platform.

Gun control is a DECIDING factor for gun owning voters....to the exclusion of any number of other issues. It costs the Dems big time. Some of them are figuring it out.

(I don't know how to quote!)

Anyways, This statement describes myself entirely. In fact I guess I think that most Democrats are way too conservative on most issues. Or maybe better put would be to say that they talk a good talk but don't do anything different than republicans where the rubber meets the road.

All politicians are scum. Some more than others. Just because W talks like a patriot while he tries to run this nation off of a cliff doesn't make me like him anymore than someone who says that this country needs to make some serious changes-and then does nothing to make them.

However like the majority has stated: my personal life and possesions and right to do what I want as long as I hurt no others will always exist. No matter if the man likes it or not. Gun control is idiotic and is just a way for politicians to gain support from the uninformed. It also helps out nicely that no matter how wacky the gov. gets they will always have the edge in weaponry to keep Joe Citzen in his place, one way or another.

Wow talk about coincidence!

I was at the library with the family on the 11th and this exact book grabbed my attention so I grabbed it to read! So here I come to THR and find a thread where you picked up the same book on almost the same day. Freaky.

I am not too far in, but so far ts a great read. Got some depressing parts (unfortunately I see myself in so many of the people) but it is speaking the truth. The class division issue in America is stronger now than it ever was before.

I have not read his book

and have no intentions to.

He first asserts all the pro-2k stuff, which is great, but then combines it with a rant on racists, rednecks etc.

Yeah? so what? There are racists on the anti side, there are rednecks who don't own guns. There are people from all walks of life in the gun world. There are Blacks, Hispanics, Eskimos, Gays, and every other minority or majority you can find. This is in all walks of life.

It makes it seem that yes, he was pro-gun and he is enlightened, not like all those other gun nut, racists. It seems to be a sneaky way to insulate himself to other leftists.

Well...we wouldn't want you to broaden your horizons or anything

To know the ocean, I only need one mouthful.... I don't have to read every leftist author that comes down the pike to understand the lack of thought processes behind their crayon writings.

I don't have to read every book to be informed. I choose not to read drivel and read books that interest me and frankly, reading a screed from a leftist isn't high on my priority list.

So, I shall broaden my horizons as I choose, and not to please anyone else.

Take it easy there Dravur...see that little blue winky face...it is about as close as you can get in forumspeak to a friendly verbal jab. :D

You might be able to get a sense of what saltwater tastes like by taking a sip of the ocean...but you can't know the whole thing that way. The substance of my reply addressed your assertion that Bageant's support of gun ownership was "sneaky." He's not sneaky...the guy is a belligerent jackhammer with a clearly stated point of view.

If you automatically dismiss something out of hand as a drivel, amounting to nothing more than a screed, written in crayon....you might miss out on something good here and there.

But to each their own.

wow, I will get that book , thanks

on some "gun" forums its a bunch of crud spouted by wannabe nazi kids who don't really own guns.
They get their info from the web, & think that "nazis" liked guns.

MOST of Obama voters think EVERY gun owner/shooter/2A activist is a backwoods animal slayer that hates Blacks/Jews/Muslims/commies/pinko/hippies and everyone else not in the KKK
