Dear Revolver BrainTrust,

I just purchased a S&W 25-5 with an N-series serial number which I understand will likely have oversized throats.

I read that if one does have oversized throats, and does not reload (I cannot), that Remington 250 grain and Winchester 255 grain (or similar) bullets with a hollow base may work well.

Based upon this theory, I was wanting to "Book End" my 25-5 whereby I would buy a box of 45 LC ammunition that would likely shoot badly with oversized throats and another box of 45 LC ammunition that would likely shoot well with oversized throats so I can figure out what the extremes are.

If the extremes are too great then I will explore the cylinder replacement route.

I would appreciate it if someone could recommend to me which bullets I should buy for each Book End.

Thank you in advance.

I would think it would only be a problem if you are shooting cast bullets if your cylinder throats are larger See if you can just push a cast bullet through the cylinder or if it just falls through it it would be better if it was a little snug anyway you just need to go shoot it

Why not take it to a gunsmith and have them check it when you get it in your hands? You may not have a problem. If there is a problem you will know exactly what it is. Maybe tgat smith might have a fix. It may worth a try. :)

I plan to mic the chambers myself, then shoot it, and then take it to a gunsmith if there is an issue. If there is one thing I have learned as a Gun Guy, it is that there are many problems that many people cannot notice because they cannot shoot well enough. :)

I have an N series 25-5 with a 6" barrel that I bought new back in 1982. It shoots better than I can. When I belonged to a range that had IHMSA silhouette competitions, I'd routinely shoot at and hit the 100 meter pig sighter target.

I've never checked the chamber throats.

I do reload but I use bullets sized to .452" diameter. Shoot your gun when you get it, you may be surprised.

The only idiosyncrasy of my gun, with the same load and bullets, W-W cases would stick in the chambers while R-P cases would not.
