I have a box of grips for this. The problem is most are oversized and I'm real impressed with the Boot style grips I see on S & W j-frames. The only online ones I see for the Colt are the Eagle secret service grips that I hear mixed things about. I seem to read postive, glowing reports from owners of Spegel and Ahrends Boot grips but have never seen them online for the Colt. In addition I wonder if there are any others out there I don't know about.

At one time Colt made a version of the Detective Special called the Agent. This revolver had an alloy frame and a shortened butt. If your particular gun is one of those where the grips extend down below the frame you might consider the Agent grips.

Those S&W boot grips are supposed to be made by Uncle Mikes, and also identical to Spegels boot grips. That should give you an idea of Spegels.

Back in the late 90's HandGunning Magazine had a cover story about a customised Colt Detective Special.
The finished gun had a new set of Spegel Boot grips on it that looked fantastic.

I have a 3rd issue DS and I'm also looking for a good set of boot style grips for it. I have a set of factory woods that are really really bad. Possibly the worst grips I've ever seen on a quality revolver. My Smith Centennial wears Eagle Secret Service grips and, for the most part I'm happy with them. Look really close and you do see some flaws in the checkering, but not bad overall. I really do wish Spegel would get his act together and setup an online store, though.

About 10-11 years ago I spoke to Craig Spegal on the phone about making his boot grips for the Det Special. I already had 2 pair of his grips for a 2 1/2 inch Mod 66. He told me that he stopped making boot grips for the Colt D frame because of the inconsistency of the grip sizes. I for one wouldn't mind a crummy fit if Uncle Mike's/Butler came out with Spegal's version of the boot grip in neoprene. I bought a pair of Eagle's version of a boot grip and they are too small for me to hang onto.
