does anyone know how accurate bore sighters are? cause i dont see how the laser ones can really work that well if they dont take in consideration of the bullet diameter, grain, and how much powder is being used etc. or are there any bore sighters that may calculate all of this?

When my father bought me a muzzle loader and scope for last Christmas he had it bore sighted. It was right on at 50 yards. Since then, the zero has wandered so I have had to adjust it but the one they used must have been pretty accurate. I think it depends on what brand it is.

Bore sighting is really a rough sight in, so you have to make final adjustments yourself. A laser bore sighter I have seen fits just right so it goes in the direct center of the bore so its pretty much right on. I assume you sight it in at like 25 yards, or however the longest indoor distance is(with the laser). You then finalize it at 25 yards with live ammo. Then you progressively move out further until you get to however far you want to go.

There's two types: One fits in the chamber with an adapter that aligns it, and the other fits in the muzzle and is aligned by the cone shape of the inserted end. My adapter version, also has an insert in the muzzle to reduce and center the beam from the chamber. No, they don't compensate for the ballistics of the caliber, they simply are designed to get an accurate zero for the sights or scope. I bought mine after essentially wasting a range trip where the rifles weren't even on paper.

so basically a bore sighter will obviously not sight in your gun perfect, but it should sight in your gun perfect so you do not have to adjust for left and right. so ill probably be shooting a few inches low or high the first time and then make a few adjustments? i was thinking of getting a leupold magnetic bore sighter which i think after you zero it and shoot and then do the final zero; you can set your bore sighter to where your scope crosshairs are so that way you can recheck it whenever. but i dont know, does anyone have this thing or know what i am talking about?

I bought a Bushnell Laser Boresighter for under $40. It's a simple system with plastic inserts to fit any bore from .22 Cal up to .50 Cal. It won't sight in your scope but it will get your bore and scope lined up close enough to hit the paper. Then you can do the final adjustments to sight in your scope.

If you get one that goes in the muzzle just remember to take it out before you start shooting. ;)

Never could see any value to them. Just start out at 25 yards, make a few adjustments, go to 50 do likewise and then to 100.
