Where did you get the idea you can't hunt in the SE with a 7mm mag. Do you have powerlines , hay fields, farm fields, crops. Still look'n for some where to use it justify your new toy. You may find it's your number 1 gun but first. Gaet some ammo, clean it well. Now got to the range and see what it likes. Set your scope for a 300 yard zero and you will be around 3" high at hundred yards 2.25 at 200 and 6.5 low at 400. Do try hornady's superformance ammo or some of the old heavy mag loads in the 139gr sst too. I have used a 7 rem mag as my primary goto for the last 18 years or so. My 308 does not get near the use it should but...Killed deer at 20 feet out 400yards. I have a friend thats now gone but he killed several elk and moose with his 7 rem mag useing Nosler partitions and trophy bonded 160gr. One elk was so for off and a real lucky shot that the bullet was still in the heart. Some good balistic guys can make a good guess at yardage. This was at 12000 feet. He also killed hundreds of deer in his life with his 7 rem mag. mostly FL and AL deer.

Hello Lloveless, Thank you for your response
"Well that isn't quite right. Bump the muzzle velocity of the .308 up to 2700 fps, which is about normal for a 150 gr. .308(or to 2600fps as is the 7 mm) and let's see what the difference is?"
Ok what i did was recalculate with both rounds doing 2700 fps. And guess what? Their respective trajectories were exactly the same! So, okay they are the same. But here is the twist I can load the 7mm rem mag to 2800 fps safety and that is where the 7mm rem mag pulls ahead and is flatter. According to Hornady 7th edition the 308s max load is 2700 fps. So, ultimately the gas tank for the 7mm is bigger and therefore can beat the 308 in a straight out drag race for distance and trajectory.

The difference at 300 yards was 1.3 inches, not much. 7mm drops 13.4" at 300 the 308 drops 14.7 at 300 yards.

And i know you guys probably load these rounds at higher fps but i am going by the book for the sake of this exercise.

Finally if you get a 7mm rem mag caliber gun You can download and make it act like a 308. But not vise versa.

If you take a look at the Shooting Times ballistic chart you will see factory loads from many different brands. Now I know that factory ballistics rarely are realized in real world rifles, but for the most part, things should equal out. Checkout the highest energy ammo offered for each, at 500yds.
The 7mm Remag shoots flatter and has a bit more energy than the 308, as it should for the amount of powder burned.
The not so surprising information is just how close the old 30'06 runs to the 300 Win Mag in all categories with their top loads.

I'm sorry. I think if your only running 2700fps your shooting a 180gr bullet. Check the 308 for 180/rt loads and then match balistics. I like the 308 round, its very effective for case capacity, but if your planning a shot over 350-450yds? I'm not talking targets,
I'm talking ft lbs

sifugun Try some factory hornady heavy mags are the superformance loads and see what the 7mm and 308 does with them. Even the old light mag for the 308 worked well. You might find you pick up several hundred FPS. I put a 28" krieger on my 7mag and get over 3300 fps with the old HM hornadys. They advertize at 3210. Hornadys 308 150gr gets 3000fps in the super load and you should get real close with a 21 inch barrel and all is safe. My old 788 does. If your rifle likes them. Hand loads are cheap for play'n but for hunting these hotter rounds might be the way to step up yardage a bit for hunting. That and moveing your zero out several hundred yards with out lots of experimenting with hoter loads.
