Last week I purchaced a sealed case of Hungarian 7.62x54R. It was a wooden crate with two sealed tins inside. When I opened the wooden case a few days later the tins were heavily corroded on the bottom with corrosion holes that went through the metal.
After opening one of the tins the paper wrapping was brittle and the the rounds were slightly discolored. I pulled one twenty round pack from the center to test.
Results were poor. Out of twenty rounds-ten fired perfectly, five were duds, and five miss-fired. The miss-fires had a 1-2 second delay from primer strike to ignition. Lucky for me the gunshop where I purchaced it from gave me a compleate refund and an apology. They also had one other case of this ammo and when they opened it the inside of the wooden crate was termite eaten and the tins were also corroded but in better shape with no holes going through the can.
The lesson learned is to always check the contents of a crate of ammo, no matter what it looks like on the outside.
