I've been looking for a knife with Bowie style and at least a 10-inch blade for a while.
The Browning Crowell/Barker Competition knife, Model 580 is what I found. It's just about what I had in mind. I got it for a good price at Sportsman's Guide, ordered one, saving a bit more with the on-line coupon, and it arrived last week. A.G. Russell also sells it although they want a bit more for it.
The knife is made in Taiwan. I have had enough trouble with knives made in the Peoples Republic Of China so I don't buy them any more. Knives made in Taiwan seem to be a cut above the Communist Chinese-made ones.
The blade is two inches wide, 10 inches long, and sharp. The spine is a quarter inch thick in front of the handle and tapers both ways from there. The blade stock runs all the way through the grip. It is tapered to about an eighth of an inch by the butt of the grip. The knife balances well and the grip is angled down a bit. I guess that is to make cutting rope in competition easier. I don't plan to compete with it, just keep it around as a big knife.
I'd been looking at a Marble knife with a double brass hilt and an eight-inch blade. The Browning cured me of the Marble. It may not have cured me of a custom bowie, but it has probably delayed it for a while.
