Thanks to THR and you guys........

Well THR got me again. I have many shotguns and don't really need another but thanks to you guys and all the great information posted on this forum, I had to break down a buy a pump gun, my first pump by the way.

I set out for a 1300 Practical Defender because of the configuration but as things would be, my local gun shop had a Rem 870 Express Turkey Camo, 3", 12ga, 21" vent rib bbl on the shelf for $314.00. I bought an extended tube for it and a few different choke tubes including a rifled, cylinder, and modified, it came with an X-Full Turkey choke.

I figured it's a pretty damn good all around pump gun seeing as how it can shoot about anything and be used for HD and different forms of hunting as well. I'm anxious to shoot it. I'll try to post a pic of it after I get the tube on it and have had a chance to shoot it.

Thanks again.

Good shotgun, decent price.

I've long thought the Turkey Express offered the most shotgun for least cash.

Now, go wear it out......

Karl, thanks for the heads up, I'll check into it.

Dave, the gun sure feels good, the beads line up instantly for me when shouldering.

mastinson, are those J Frames in the background?

As you can see all of my guns exept the 2 j frames are hunting guns so if the crap ever does hit the fan I have around 200+ rounds of 00 buck and another 100+ rounds of slugs for my trusty 870. If I was only allowed 1 gun it would be my 870, I would even pick it over my ruger 270 because of do everything ability.

Very nice, nice rifles too.

I'm like you, have everything from semi-auto's, OU's, SXS's, to upland specials and 410's but I have never had a pump. I've always used my upland specials or short barreled doubles for HD. I will admit that I always felt the desire for having more ammo in the gun but yet wanted a gun that I could hunt with as well. Thus the 870.

Dave probably wants to throw me of a bridge because I am one that frequent the shotgun forum occasionally and tout semi-auto's and their reliability today and their function as an HD gun. Well, guess who got switched by reading posts, it wasn't Dave McCracken that's for sure. ;) I'm sure the man has forgot more about shotgunning than I know.

You speak of SHTF? I think I'll like the 870 and my M1.30 carbine with 30 rounders. I would like an M1A but can't justify the 1,500 clams. Oh yea, that and my Hi-Powers, they seem to be guns that are like the proverbial Eveready bunny, they just go and go and go.......

But as you, the vast, vast majority of my shotguns, rifles and even handguns are for hunting.

One of the big advantanges of pumps for HD is when the bad guy hears the unmistakable sound of a round being chambered -- somewhere in the dark -- he knows he's in real deep poo poo.

little known fact: Every time you rack your shotgun the nearest criminal actually DIES. They gotta be real carefull in prisons.

12ga, 21" vent rib bbl

Im seriously considering swapping my 18" CB for one of these. Its seems like the absolute best of all possible roles for a shotgun rolled into one barrel. I wonder how it would look with a factory mag-extension?

Nice one, Marshall. If it's got 870 in the name, it must be superb! :D

And i'm all jealous. I gave myself a handle with the number in it, because I intend to own one but still don't even have mine. :( (Maybe I should have called myself Nematocyst-9, cause I've had one of those for years...)

(Still waiting on money that was promised to arrive in July. Let's see, 4 months late... but worth the wait... I did get an IRS refund, and thought I'd get it with that, but then the business ate that, so I'm still waiting...)

So, I'm curious: what, exactly, is different about those turkey guns? Why do 'turkeys' get their own model?

Turkey shotguns, Nema, have dull or camo finishes, short barrels and are chambered for maggie numb shells.

This one was purpose built, and unlike most specialized shotguns, is good for a variety of missions.

With an open choke, it'll mimic a quail/grouse/woodcock shotgun well.

With a tighter one, it'll do the job on geese, ducks, swans and cranes, though the blast in a crowded blind from that short a barrel is, uh, emphatic.

With the right slug, it'll bring in much venison, and many memories.

And it can seem quite comforting in the hands when things go bump in the dark.

Most turkey guns and for that matter goose guns too, have a tight or extra tight (full) (extra full) chokes. Most have longer barrels to help reach out there and touch your targets at longer distance. Today many are chambered in 3in mags and 3.5 in mags to really reach out there. Most of your bird guns will have a shorter barrel and more open, less restircted, chokes to open up the patterns sooner and improve pointabilty, swing and follow thru not to mention a shorter barrel is easier to manuver thru bird cover. Any of them can be camo'd per your preference.
You just can't hardly beat an 870, plus especialy in the dark, the sound of pump gun being racked, is unmistakeable. ;)

Marshall,

If by 'tube' you mean magazine extension, please try it first without adding the extension. You might discover you like the gun better plain than with an extra few ounces added up front.

I think you did really well on this buy, the Turkey version is about as versatile a single shotgun as there is to be found. The dual bead setup works as rudimentary sights if needed, the vent rib is an eyecatcher for wingshooting or clay games and the RemChoke system lets the gun be tailored for a variety of uses. It is short enough to be handy inside yet the barrel is long enough to swing on birds or clays.

Enjoy it, and Stay safe!

Lee, thanks for your advice.

I bought the extended magazine tube purely for HD or just out farting around. For hunting I will definitely put the standard tube and spring back on. Besides, wouldn't want to give game wardens something to bitch about. ;) Oh I agree, what a versatile gun.

Nema, have you considered layaway? I have bought many guns this way when the cash was a little short and I had hankering for a new gun.

Bought an 18.5" extended mag 870 the other day--I was surprised at how inexpensive it was. All synthetic furniture, obviously.

Since it's primarily an HD gun, what should I be looking into as far as accessories are concerned? It's got the one bead on the front, but that's it.

Dave and others, thanks for the explanation of 'turkey' gun. Makes good sense. I like the idea of 'choke tubes' too, for that extra versatility. Very cool.

Marshall, I did consider layaway when I found an 870 that I (almost) wanted, but decided against it. I would have only had 60 days after putting down a deposit to pay the remainder, afer which I'd have lost the deposit. That was back in July, it's now October, and the money is still not here.

The short story: I'm waiting on my share of an estate from my beloved late aunt. The estate has been in probate for about a year and a half. The lawyer informed us that the estate would be settled and funds distributed by July. He was wrong. Don't know why, but he was.

{{Joke only; no offense to lawyers on this forum; I've got jokes about biologists, like me, too): Q: How do you know if a lawyer is lying? A: He's got his mouth open.}}

Anyway, I've found a source for THE specific 870P that I want for a good price. They are deep in the backwoods of {sorry, it's a secret til I get mine ;) } and have had three in stock for months. As soon as the money comes, I'll order it.

The final hearing (legal petition) for distribution of funds was yesterday. I expect a check within ... geez, maybe I won't jynx this by even making a prediction.

Been there done that, I do understand. It can get very frustrating at times, sounds like you got it licked though. Shouldn't be long. :)
