I impulsively bought a new Colt/Walther AR 22LR rifle one week ago for $525 at our local shop, and finally took it out yesterday! Since buying it I've read mixed reviews on it and was considering returning it, but decided to give it a chance. I love it!
It felt solid, very much like my Bushmaster m4 in feel, weight, and balance. The fit and finish seemed good to me, all the parts fit tight, no rattles noted. The magazine fits snugly and the operation is very smooth.
I shot 500 rounds of Walmart's cheapest stuff through it with only one FTF (probably due to the cheap ammo) and absolutely no jams, failures to extract, or any other problems. Through the iron sights I was able to consistently create 1 1/2 inch groups at 50 yards. I feel that these groups could be tightened up with a scope or by placing the rifle into the hands of a more competent marksman.
There are a few small things that I don't like about the rifle. The typical AR bolt release on the left side of the rifle is cosmetic and serves no purpose. Same thing with the forward assist button. While they improve the cosmetic appearance of the rifle, they still serve no purpose. There are three dummy pins also placed for cosmetic appearance above the trigger group, and if someone didn't read the instruction manual (who really does that anyways) they may attempt to remove those pins. I was forewarned by our local shop owner about those pins.
Overall, it is a lot of cheap fun and I feel it was money well spent. I have no illusions about using this rifle for anything except target shooting/plinking. I have read a lot of negative comments about this rifle, and while I disagree with most of them I realize I may have simply been lucky and received one that worked well. I would encourage anyone who has the opportunity to shoot one of these to do so before criticizing. I would love to hear your experiences with this rifle.
