Today I stopped by my local gun shop ( The Ammo Bearer - Best gun shop in Iowa City and propbably the midwest) and I walked out with a new Romanian 1997 AK-74. I didn't get to go to the range, but I am planning to break it down tonight and check everything out and see how it compares to the 47. It has a thumbhole stock, but I was told that because rifle was imported before the executive order importation ban in 98 the rifle is 100% Romanian parts and has not been cobbled together with American parts. While I like that, I cannot swap out the stock for it unless I start swapping out other internal parts for US ones. Oh Well.

I am hoping to add a nice bipod and an Russian AK74 scope, but I don't know where to get the stuff; any suggestions?

I bought a Kobra from Tantal and recommend them highly.

You might also consider the PK-AS instead of the Kobra.

Another place to try, though I have no first-hand experience, is Freedom Optics

Personally, I have a PO 3.5x21P on my Bulgamerican '74.

Edit: see this thread .

One thing I've been wondering on this whole US parts fiasco, is how the hell can you tell where a part was made? Do they come with a big "Made in the USA" stamp on them now?? I mean they're basically small pieces of metal or wood that usually don't have any markings on them or am I mistaken?

As with most firearm laws, I do believe that the burden of proof is on you. So, keep the packages.

No, the burden of proof should be on the government, but they do maintain a reference library of imported parts.

Yes, actually. Or some sort of marking that distinguishes them from the imported version. IIRC, "FSE" is stamped on all AK fire control parts made by "First Son Enterprises". Others use "US". Kvar molds "US" into all of their stock parts, but I can't recall what they put on their fire control stuff.

A US-made stock set and fire control parts should do the "Americanizing" trick. Kvar is a good source for such parts. Then, your gun wouldn't look and feel a lot like an AK74, it would look and feel just like an AK74.

I bought a PK-01V red dot sight from Freedom Optics. Excellent service, wouldn't hesitate to do business with him again.

I think you can replace the stock with a foriegn made one. I believe it is foreign to begin with.

But only as long as it's still a thumbhole stock... :uhoh:

Also, Century has a visible "C" stamped into their hardware. Found it when I was doing a polishing job on my SAR's FCG.
