I went to the gun show in Suffern NY today and bought my first SKS. Now I need to find a place to shoot it.

Since you mention that it's your first SKS ,forgive me if you already knew this but don't forget to clean it really well before shooting, especially disassemble the bolt assembly and clean the cosmoline out of the firing pin tunnel. The firing pin should rattle and move freely in the bolt when assembled. This dramatically reduces slam-fires.

cleaning the bolt +1 (and don't be afraid to pound the ever loving chit out of the retaining pin either)

also, clean the gas system really well.

I put the pin over a gap in a vise and went to town with my 20 ounce anti-vibration hammer. It took some doing, but that bad boy came out.

The SKS is a whole lot of fun. Hopefully, 7.62x39 will become more plentiful again, so I can go shoot mine some more.
