Gents,

I just picked up an XD9 on impulse. The price was good and it was only used a couple weeks. What do you fellows who own them think of them? What sorts of accessories or mods are worth looking into? I am pretty impressed really. Being a 1911 guy, the plastic stuff usually doesn't appeal but I was thinking of getting a Glock as a cheap beater 9mm. I ran across the XD and thought it had some cool features. That and it might not hurt me to learn another system. My plan is to lay in some 40 mags and use this as a spare CCW/car piece for when I don't want to put a $800+ 1911 on the line. It is pretty close in size to my commanders. If I like it I might grab one in .357. I have had a hankering for that caliber, and this platform seems like it would make a neat package for the round.

my good friend just got one, and i'm quite impressed. comfortable to use, great trigger, no manual safety to mess with, no external hammer to worry about... those last two probably don't matter much to a 1911 owner, but hey ;)

only concern is the finish on the slide...

I'm VERY happy with my Bi-tone XD9. Finish really isn't an issue, especially if you get the Bi-tone.

I'm trying to track down one of the tactical 9mm's as my next gun purchase. After that, it'll be the XD9 subcompact.

I have an XD-9compact

how do I feel about it??

Sometimes when I sleep I call for my XD-9 compact

my precioussssssssssssssssss:D

In love and with all due respect

Yes the XD feel great. Yes it is accurate but shy do I spend $450.00 on one when I know the blued version is going to rust? I can take that same money or slightly less and get a Ruger P 95/97 or a Sig 2340/2009 and be worry free.

Yes I think the XD is a wonderful deal at the old HS2000 price point. Springfield Armory needs to do more than change the name and add thumb swells to merit $100.00 more dollars for the price.

Forget about asthetics. the rust issue might be solved with nothing more than adding in an additional wash/rinse step in the process or.......eliminating contaminants in the air via a better ventillation system.

I lovvveeee the feel of the XD but I will pay $50.00-$100.00 more for a pistol that does not have a predispoition to rust. I am still waiting on SA.

I am not a guy who spends a enormous time cleaning my weapons, and yet my xd-9 has yet to rust after 20 months of use, and 6 months of carrying off and on. I think the rust factor is a little overblown unless you live in a maritime environment of some sort. I wore mine all last week, and it was raining everyday, and I had no problems. With that said, Im saving up for sending it to the custom shop, where Ill probally get it armorkoted.

It's obvious, though you try to disguise it in your post, that you've never owned an XD. I've never heard anyone report rusting with their XD.

People buy Sigs, which have a far crappier finish for more money.

I also thought the price thing had gone away, but apparently people who haven't owned them still like to carp about it

If an XD isn't worth the $100 Springfield has added on, which they had to to make a profit, then a Glock certainly isn't worth the $100 more than the XD, since I'm sure they both cost almost exactly the same to make.

You also can't go wrong with Springfield's customer service.

So, listen to the people who own them, and not the guntards who haven't and like to harp about things they've heard from other people who have never owned them, and buy an XD.

This isn't even a matter of "Glocks Suck, XD's Rule", because both are fine weapons, but people post garbage like that above which are out and out lies.

Uh, go look on the HS2000Talk forum. There was a poll at one point, and about 25% of people reported some level of rusting that they didn't find acceptable. It comes up somewhat regularly.
Forum members also reported that Springfield is quite willing to refinish your XD for free, if you complain.
I got the impression that it isn't so much that the finish process they use is bad, but rather that the quality control is a little bit sketchy.

I've had a bit of rust on my XD that I don't think should've been there, but then, its existance reflects poorly on how well I was cleaning, so of course I don't think the rust should've been there. :)

I havn't had troubles since, though. I keep the trouble spots oiled a bit more heavily, and my holster keeps the slide away from my skin, and everything seems fine.

No, you DON'T know that the blued version is going to rust. According to all loose polls and "show of hands" polls I've seen the majority do not have the rust problem. Some do. I've also heard reports that the finish has slowly gotten better and that fewer people are having problems. I've never had any rust issues on my XD-9 subcompact, which is my daily carry gun.

Where did you get the impression that 100% of blued XD's rust anyway?! That's an absolutely ridiculous overstatement.

They don't rust of you take care of your gun properly.
You have to take care of all your guns anyway so just do it right and you wont have any problem. I've had SIG's and HK's rust on me when I was negligent. (In Virginia negligent means you forgot to wipe it down with an oil rag on day)

The rusting issue in the XD's is moot.
If I was going to buy a poly 9MM or .40 - it would be an XD. In a heart beat... any day, twice on sundays. Small, Medium or Large, they are all excellent.

If you are so paranoid about the slide rusting:
Take it off and apart.
Degrease it.
Apply a spray on polycoat finish.
Bake it.
Reasseble.

To degrade an excellent pistol because your too lazy to wipe it down once in awhile is pretty sad. Maybe you should be looking at Stainless guns.

I've had mine for about a month now. I really like it. I'm not too hot over it being chambered in 9mm(.45guy) but it'll serve as my back up piece and inexpensive plinker.

Wrong

Sorry sundance. You are not correct. While the XD is a fine gun, the finish IS an issue. As mentioned above, this is a frequent complaint on www.hs2000talk.com Those (we) folks are fans of this weapon, but are honest enough to acknowledge a weakness when they see one.

vampire,

I agree that it has been an issue and XD's don't have the best finish in the world nor do they have the worst. However, the issue has been exaggerated and compaints on hs2000talk seem to be declining. I'm an XD owner and I'm also in touch with reality and I notice that the majority of XD owners have NOT had this problem.

I currently own a XD9 Subcompact.

There is nothing wrong with the finish on the one I currently one. At one time I owned a XD40 and the finish was decent. I've never had a rust problem with either XD. The skin on the XD40 wasnt that tough but hey SA has something called a lifetime warranty. They really stand behind there product.

Like George said "They don't rust of you take care of your gun properly."

I just recently bought an XD-9 with the stainless finish slide, four inch model. It's a great pistol. I've put about 300 rounds through it (CCI Blazer, Winchester 100 round white box) and it has functioned perfectly. I wouldn't have to think twice about buying another in the future.

My carry piece is an XD40.

It has never shown the slightest sign of rust.

It is a GREAT handgun.

I'd recommend that anyone looking for a 9mm/40S&W/.357SIG take a look at them.

There have been people that had problems with it, but look at any gun-specific forum, and you'll find the same complaints. Treat it (or any gun) with proper care, and chances are, you won't have a problem.

I am glad to hear that the majority of you are having good luck. I likew tge guns and frankly, the wearing of the finish is not an iisue as long as they are not prone to rust with regular maintenance.

Well while you guys were chatting over the finish, I went out and ran a few hundred rounds through it. Not a hiccup, and damn accurate. Wish I could say that for the Dan Wesson 10mm PT-C I had along. It choked more than it worked. Off to the smith with that one. The XD shipped right from the factory. I shot it pretty well too for a die-hard 1911 fan. The trigger took a few rounds to get used to, then everything went in one big hole. I could even rapid fire it pretty well, and being a 9mm there was next to no recoil.

Anyway, I appreciate the feedback here and the info on the finish. This is a recent model, so perhaps my experience as I carry it will indicate whether SA did improve things. I am sure glad I bought this over a Glock. I shoot it far better than any Glock I have handled, and for some reason it fits me pretty well even though I am heavily imprinted on the 1911. That lead me to the odd problem of reaching my thumb forward past the slide release that is closer to where I am used to a safety being. Pretty silly, but I better work on that lest I fail to drop the slide when it counts.

I liked it so much in fact that I came home and bought an XD357 off Gunbroker. I have got to stop that. My wife is going to find a cheaper husband if I am not careful, or at least one that spends more money on her!

:D

"no honest man needs more than one XD"

send it to me! :D

Anyways, the XD is a great platform, IMO. I bought the 4" 40S&W model, and my lady wants a bi-tone 9mm real bad. I'm buying it for her for the birthday

James

If your that concerned about rust, shop around for a bi-tone, with the stainless slide. Should alleviate your concerns about the finish, and looks gorgeous to boot!

Those bi-tones are neat looking, as are the green ones. Those 5" models also look pretty handy. I am thinking I will lay in a 40 barrel for the 357 as well so I can run both rounds. Should make for a versatile platform.

Then 25% of people who polled are lazy bas*ards who don't take care of their guns, period, nuff said.

Marshall:

settle down. think about what you just posted. I have heard of more than a few whop had rust issues. I see the finishes improving significantly each time my favorite gun dealer gets new ones in. I do think it was a valid point of condern. That said, I like the weapon and it feels great as posted earlier.
