Well, over 50% there, its on layaway till I get the paperwork from my local sheriff office (which thankfully is not a problem or long wait in my county)

Hyatt Guns in Charlotte with the general idea of buying "Something" - Celebrating that I will not have to have back surgery, the supreme court ruling, and getting stuff before any changes to the laws take place. As a note, while NC has a Conceal Carry that is easily accessable, I work in a Courthouse where I cannot carry, thus I do not plan to Conceal Carry at this time.

while I have fair amount of cash, was thinking on getting a inexpensive ($400-$500) Revolver or perhaps a AK47 or "Something"

Anyways, I arrived when they opened and started to look around, and for those who never been to Hyatt guns, while there are no great "Deals" it has a massive selection of firearms with prices that are highish but they make room to haggle. Skipped over the cheep mouseguns (of the likes of the Raven) Looked first over revolvers, looking at a few Rugers, a nice Colt, and a stack of Taurus.

As a note, there are very few if any used guns, appears that folks are stockpiling what they have, not that I blame them.

Looked next over the Semi-autos, none of the .380 and small guns intrested me, but then got to the Non-Glock nines, and handled a number of them, a full Sized CZ 75b, and a CZ compact, Own a CZ rifle and like the company, the 75b is a nice pistol, but the safety was not easily reached by my thumb, the compact CZ P01 worked well, and I marked it as something to go back too.

Then a gun caught my eye, a Browning Hi Power with very nice grips. The tag price was a little too high ($899) for my budget, but when your looking at guns half the fun is playing with toys you will never buy, and the Hi Power really fit my hand to a T, with the safety being at the ideal distance for me to push down on it and it "Just Fit". Sadly, I put it back and kept looking.

The Glocks did not intrest me too much, I know folks who have them that really like them, but for a few reasons didn't think it right for me, and then on to the 1911s. Lots of nice ones, but I didn't want to spend $1200 on a Kimber.

Then there was the El-grand Revolvers, of the likes of a .44 with 7 inch barrels. Fun to look at, but not good first guns.

Then I looked at the more Mil-spec type rifles. Now these where sadly more expensive then they should be, and even the AKs where listed at $1000. for anyone who looking for Mosins, they have some of the best I have seen, listed under $190.

Back to the handgun section, as I was looking around I realized something. This will be my self-defense gun, and really, no need to be cheap on something that might save your life if you can afford otherwise.

So I looked at the Browning Hi Power again, was able to haggle them to $825 plus tax, and I put it on layway since I did not have the local sheriff permit that is required (but thankfully is easy to obtain in my area) and put $500 towards the Browning Hi Power.

In two weeks when I pick it up I will post pictures

Great choice! You will love it :D

If you want really comfortable/practical grips, I can recommend the hogue mono-grips. They are not as pretty as a nice set of wood grips, but they work very well. You can also improve the trigger pull by removing the magazine disconnect safety. It's very easy to do, you can easily find instructions for it on the internet.

With a price tag like that, I suppose yours is made in Belgium too?

A few pictures to help you pass the time until you can pick it up ;)

You can't go wrong with a HighPower. One of the best pistols made along side the 1911.

For a split second I though you meant a Hipoint and though "Oh, please no, not as a first handgun."

Congratulations and I hope you pick it up soon.

I really like the wooden grips, and actually they felt really good in my hands, in fact a lot better then most other of the pistols I tried. Of course I have not fired the thing so after a range session or three I might be changing Grips, while I will keep that in mind with the trigger.

Yep, it was produced by FN Belgium. Though It might of been one of the FN Belgium Portugal ones. (it the ones that come with two 10 round magazines) I do not have enough knowlige of the Hi Powers except that for me at least it was the best handgun out of the 200 or so they had for me. I hope that the $825 was not out of reasion for a Hi Power, as it seems to be at least "Within Reasion" of what I seen online for a brand new Hi Power, and I willing to pay a premimum for the abilty to handle and handpick the gun.

Thanks, Great photos!

They did have a Hipoint, rather ugly thing, if I paid $825 for a Hipoint I would be very very stupid

I will be most likely picking it up on the 1st, as next weekend I have to go visit family, and I have to pick it up on a weekend as Charlotte is a 2 hour drive away, and I don't want to miss work just to pick up a gun, no matter how nice it is

Hyatt's does get a lot of bad press, but I was there a couple of months ago and picked up a Kimber SS Ultra Carry. They had the best price I found including internet sites.

The Hi Power is the only gun I have shot that keeps biting my had with the hammer.

Has this been fixed? You may want to reconsider if this could be a problem for you.

Yup--I agree with the other guys. The Hi-Power is a good gun. I had one oncre (about 50years ago!) Some time later when I was reducing my armory I sold it, made the choice between it and a Beretta! Mine was the model 1951 Brigadier (great granddaddy of present service pistol.) You won't find it in any gun reference. They later drolpped the 1 off and called it the model 951---same gun. I liked the open top of my Beretta. I thought if it ever jammed it would be easier to clear than the Hi Power. Neither of them ever jammed though. I think the Hi Power is one of the really prettiest guns I've seen over the years. Glad you didn't go for a mouse gun like the .380----9mm ammor is cheaper, and packs more punch. Around here a HiPoint is less than half what you were talking about there (may be more like about a 1/3 of prices there.) Back when I first started out my first "serious" gun was a .44mag Blackhawk. Big mistake! I didn't know what I was getting hold of!! Later I owned two of them. Great guns, but a bit stiff for a beginner like I was then!

I bought two out of three of my guns (if you count the hi power which I am only 1/2 their) and while you might be able to find it cheaper online, after shipping and a $20 FFL fee, your getting awfully close to the actual Hyatt price, being that they are more then willing to talk about a price on a gun. That and there service is excellent. Few gunstores give you the chance to look at 200 or so handguns and check them out. The one thing they are missing is a indoor range with rental guns.

Anyways, tomarrow I get to visit my local law enforecement center and start to get the paperwork in order.

BTW, somebody mentioned hammer bite... If it's an issue for you, there are a few after market hammers you can install that will solve the problem (cylinder & slide for example).

Hyatt Guns has over 5000 guns in stock at their store.

A lot of people think Hyatt is "real expensive", because Hyatt usually puts the MSRP on their price tags. However, they often come down quite a bit, if you ask them what their absolute lowest price is on a particular gun.

Take for example the Kimber CDP II Compact. The price tag in the store and their website both list it at the MSRP of 1255.00, but the REAL price they actually sell it for is 1050.00. Which is over 200.00 less than what you see on the price tag.

1050.00 isn't a "steal" by any means, but it's a very competitive price. The only other major gun shop in the city sells it for 1100.00. Of the two major gun shops in Charlotte, Hyatt will usually give you a better deal.
