At least the schol authorities didn't go bonkers whan they found the gun. This was in New Hampshire and I guess they are familier with guns. Chances are he will never be legally able to own a firearm again.

The student who allegedly brought a fully loaded handgun to a Wolfeboro high school Wednesday is described as a “quiet kind of kid” who apparently feared someone outside school and did not intend to harm any teachers, students or staff, police said yesterday.

Stephen Ballard, 17, was removed from class about 10 a.m. and escorted to the Kingswood Regional High School principal’s office where he voluntarily surrendered the eight-round revolver he had in his jacket pocket, police said.

No shots were fired and classes were not disrupted.

“I don’t think he was intending to harm anyone in the building — no faculty member, staff member or student. He had issues with someone after school,” Wolfeboro Police Lt. Stuart M. Chase said.

“I think generally he was in fear. I wouldn’t have considered him an aggressor here. But I can’t get into the kid’s head,” Chase added.

Ballard, an upperclassman who lives on Spruce Lane in Center Ossipee, faces criminal charges and possible expulsion from school.

He was being held in Carroll County jail on $5,000 bail yesterday.

Ballard allegedly took the Smith & Wesson .22-caliber revolver from a “family member’s house” without their knowledge, Chase said.

Police charged Ballard with disorderly conduct and carrying a firearm without a license, both Class A misdemeanors. He was arraigned in Ossipee district court Wednesday, where a judge entered a not guilty plea and continued the case to May 12.

School staff learned Ballard allegedly was armed when a student tipped off a teacher, Chase said.

“We have a student here that made a mistake,” said John B. Robertson, superintendent of Governor Wentworth Regional School District. “The student was extremely cooperative — and certainly remorseful,” Robertson added. He said the student had never been brought to his attention before for disciplinary problems.

Robertson said a letter detailing the incident was sent home to parents that day. Kingswood Regional High School is on South Main Street in Wolfeboro and enrolls nearly 1,000 students from Wolfeboro, Tuftonboro, Ossipee, Brookfield, Effingham and New Durham.

Ballard is a “quiet kind of kid” who recently enrolled in the school system, Chase said.

“He wasn’t really well known either by faculty or students, so I can’t really speculate as to what his thoughts were,” Chase said.

State law forbids weapons on school grounds, Robertson said. The penalty is expulsion. The school board will hold a hearing to determine if Ballard should be expelled, Robertson said.

"Gun free zones" are total bs, as if a criminal would respect them or a peaceful person with a gun was ever a problem.
"Zero tolerance" rules are also bs designed to automaticly toss kids into the criminal class, and to make it so no one involved would have to develop a backbone to explain their decisions.

At least this kid gets a hearing, lets see how it turns out.

Chances are he will never be legally able to own a firearm again.

Police charged Ballard with disorderly conduct and carrying a firearm without a license, both Class A misdemeanors.

I don't believe misdemeanors disqualify you from ownership.
I wonder who he was that afraid of.

I don't know about NH but here in FL he would be charged as a minor and (even if it was a felony) all charges once resolved are arased from the persons record when he becomes and adult.

"State law forbids weapons on school grounds, Robertson said."

I do not believe that is correct.

================================
I. No person shall knowingly carry a loaded or unloaded pistol, revolver, or firearm or any other deadly weapon as defined in RSA 625:11, V, whether open or concealed or whether licensed or unlicensed, upon the person or within any of the person's possessions owned or within the person's control in a courtroom or area used by a court. Whoever violates the provisions of this paragraph shall be guilty of a class B felony.

I have not found anything about schools in the NH law.

Anyone have a reference for CCW in NH schools?

There is nothing on packing.org about schools.

I have a severe interest in what sort of thing would cause a rational person (the kid's still breathing, after all) to bring a gun to school after all of the media attention on the subject. This kid might just get off on an affirmitive defense, IAPW.

Level heads? Calm? Rationality? This just doesn't feel right!
