I have the Ballistic Products reloading book - Reloading Brass Shotshells. Have most of the components except the BP. I can't seem to find FFG BP locally so I suppose an online order may be my best option - anyone here shoot the older damascus shotguns with Triple 777 or Pyrodex? Or is it recommended to use only real authentic BP in these guns? I have a LC Smith 16 that I want to hunt with this year, twist/damascus barrel and no I don't want to use the low pressure shotgun shells. Can anyone that knows offer some advice? For hunting, whats the difference between using blackpowder and a BP substitute in the brass cartridges?

Any of the black powder subs will work. I shoot an N series Parker for quail and dove. Just make sure the barrels are sound.

I have been using pyrodex in 16ga plastic shells. Nothing spectacular but it works. You won’t have the range that modern shells give but up close they do fine.

Use any of them, you'll be ok. You'll want to use fiber wads, the plastic wads will melt making a mess in the barrels. Circlefly makes them for BPI or Precision Reloading. I use a Mec 600 single stage and like [ for the 12ga - don't have a 16 ] 10ga OP wads, 11ga cushion wads, and 10ga OS cards. With the Mec enough pressure can be generated to load the larger sized wads for a nice tight fit. In a 16 you could go down to 14 and 15ga wads, if you wanted. This was all in Magtechs which are thin walled so the inside dimension is larger than a regular shell. If you're gonna be using the turned shells then they will have a smaller ID and you'll want to go with their recommendation. Any white glue will work to glue the OS card in place. With plastic shells I just use 12ga wads in the 12ga shells and with a fold crimp you won't need the glue.
I've shot both nitro, BP and subs for many years without problems. The extra pressure T7 or Pyrodex might generate is not enough to worry about. I have about 15 old SxSs - Parkers, Remingtons, and a Lefever ; all but three are Damascus [ Pattern, Twist, and one Laminate ] , and one or the other gets used shooting clays three times a week. Normally it's nitro, but for SxS events BP is usually used.
In the 12ga I often use just 70grs of 3F and 1 oz of shot to save money. The 3F burns a little hotter so less is needed. It makes a difference if you're gonna be shooting a 150 shells in one day. Good luck and have some fun.

This is all very encouraging, thanks for all the feedback. I am looking forward to using my side x side Smith.

I use Remington and Winchester plastic wads in my Parker and my double percussion shotguns as well as in a 20 gauge trade gun, never had a problem with melted plastic left behind.

Damascus is fine with modern smokeless powder cartridges as long as you use the "normal pressure" ones and avoid buckshot and slugs - quite a few people in the UK hunt with such guns for examle. That is, if the gun is in sound condition. They just need to officially proof them, if it's a "black powder era" one - to modern pressure standards for the cartridge, mind you. Damascus barrels, although weaker than a modern steel barrel, were/get blown by incompetent shooters, not just by using smokeless powder in them. So, you are quite safe using substitutes, as long as the gun is in good shape and the owner is not doing something stupid...

Subs have different pressure curves. Equal pressure does not equal the pressure curve of real black. Just my opinion, but I would never use anything but good quality black powder in a blackpowder gun, cartridge or muzzle loader. 777 in particular has done "funny" things in black powder guns.

Powders other than black will tend to "loosen up" an old gun. Don't ask me how I know that.

Nope. Just an opinion. But you can do the research, and I'd be interested to learn the results.

That's good. It will loosen up the old Belgium guns. Don't ask me how I know that.
