I'd use Churchill's words here: "This is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning."
As mentioned, even if the Brady Campaign was to end, MAIG, CSGV, the VPC, and dozens of other smaller groups are still out there and very much active. They still have powerful allies in the media and Hollywood who keep parrot their message in subtle and not so subtle ways.
I'm in my mid 20s and the wife and I have only been firearms owners for not even a year and a 1/2, but I don't expect to see the end of this fight within my lifetime. The way I see it, there's a couple classes of people out there who support the anti-gun position:
1) Elitists (Michael Bloomberg is probably the perfect example of this group, along with that Sen., Dianne Feinstein, who openly admitted to CCing a Beretta 92 for her own protection while doing everything in her power to legally deprive the commoners of protecting themselves in a similar manner.)
2) Nanny staters (they obviously hate the idea of civilian ownership of firearms, as it goes against their ideal of an all powerful, all encompassing government)
3) People who are honest to God scared to death of firearms, for whatever reason
4) Those who I swear have a hidden agenda (Josh Sugermann, for example. I've read much of what that guy has said and written over the course of the last 20 some years [the VPC keeps an archive on their site] and I'm firmly convinced that he actually knows exactly what he's talking about. He knows much of the technical aspects of firearms, knows the existing laws [he even has a FFL], and knows that gun control isn't about crime. I swear to God, he is trying to create an environment hospitable to a tyrannical government.)
I don't see these groups going anywhere any time soon, and as others have mentioned most of the general public who supports gun control doesn't do so because they know anything about it, they are pro gun control because their friends are, or because their political group is, or because it meshes with their ideal of a nanny or socialist state.
So we have to remain vigilant. To borrow the words of Churchill again,
Even though large tracts of Europe and many old and famous States have fallen or may fall into the grip of the Gestapo and all the odious apparatus of Nazi rule, we shall not flag or fail. We shall go on to the end. We shall fight in France, we shall fight on the seas and oceans, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, we shall defend our island, whatever the cost may be. We shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender, and even if, which I do not for a moment believe, this island or a large part of it were subjugated and starving, then our Empire beyond the seas, armed and guarded by the British Fleet, would carry on the struggle, until, in God's good time, the new world, with all its power and might, steps forth to the rescue and the liberation of the old.
(I was just thinking about the "We shall never surrender" part, but once I looked it up to quote I realized how moving the whole paragraph was and ended up posting the whole thing.)
