I remember that under Brady 1, all handgun sales required the OK of local LE. I thought that Brady 2 eliminated that. Can anyone tell me the current federal procedures, aside from the NICS? Thanks.

"NICS is the federal procedure."

Right! However, that doesn't stop states from adding their own additional requirements. In Colorado we have to pay for an additional CBI (Colorado bureau of Investigation) mostly because of a tragic shooting of children by a father under a restraining order from his ex. Never mind that wouldn't show up on a CBI report. Those who would restrict gun ownership or make it difficult aren't bothered by reality!!:fire:

:cuss:

The NICS in Illinois also goes through the State Police, then Illinois State Police keep the records FOREVER. This last year a bill was defeated that would have forced destruction of records after 90 days but it was defeated. Jim.

Unless it's changed very recently in Illinois the instant check consists of the dealer calling in with your number and asking "is he OK for a handgun?" long gun, whatever, not for any particular SN. The answer comes back right then.
