Just bought my first brand new gun, a Ruger 10/22.
I currently own a Mossberg 500, Mosin Nagant 91/30, a .22 Henry Mini-Bolt, and a couple pistols, so it's not my first gun, just my first NEW gun.
I'm going shooting tomorrow, and I believe I remember reading that I should clean the gun before shooting it for the first time, is this correct?
Any other 'break in' procedures?

At least, run something through the barrel. Probably not necessary, but I would. Take some RemOil with you. If you have any failure to eject problems, give a small squirt, while holding the bolt back, just in front of the bolt and down.
You need to read about the operation and the problem areas, especially on a new rifle.

I clean mine before shooting. Not that it will necessarily need cleaning, but you should inspect it and at least run a patch or mop through it, just in case there are any metal filings, etc. You will probably see a little carbon on the patch from the test firing, but it will otherwise probably be pretty clean. I usually wipe off any manufacturer's grease/oil and put my own on the weapon as well.

As already mentioned, I would clean the barrel and make sure that the action is cleaned and lubed. I would also run a patch down the barrel after each of the first 3 or so magazines - just to make sure that you are getting any left over crud out of the rifling that may have been left behind during manufacture. From there, shoot away..

I have owned my 10/22 for nearly 20 years and while many other guns have come and gone, this one has stayed with me. I have no idea how many thousands of rounds have gone down it's barrel - its not uncommon for the boys to come home from college and shoot 300 rounds through it in an afternoon. It has been refinished 3 times in it's life and it gets a complete disassemble about once a year.

Enjoy your NEW rifle! - great gun, great fun!

Blessings

Paul
