I have recently purchased my first rifle, a Ruger 10/22, from my local gunshop. Being new to rifles and riflery, is there anything I need to know about different ammunition, especially in respect to my longarm in particular? Is there a best type/brand of ammo I should use? Thanks in advance.

Mine eats anything, its like a garbage can. The only ammo it doesnt like is really old stuff, like 15+ years... Enjoy the new gun :D

Try as many different types as you can. Very likely your rifle will have a "favorite" (most accurate) load.

Different ammo mfg's. will shoot to different points of aim.Find as many that shoot reliably and to the same point of aim.It will take a while but that translates into more trigger time and better shooting in general.tom.

Mine doesn't like the American Eagle ammo (The stuff in the red boxes) It shot ok at first, then decided not to feed and eject.

I switched to some kind of Remington target ammo (runs about $3.99 per 100) and it was fine. Then I went back to the Remington AND Federal bulk packs and it was fine. So no more American Eagle in the 10/22 for me.

+1 on the Walmart 550 round box of Remington ammo. I've shot two boxes through my new "to me" Ruger 10/22. When you get done shooting the model you have, just throw a conversion kit on it and wala, a new plinking rifle.

Mine doesn't like American Eagle, but it loves the bulk Remington ammo from Wal-Mart (the gold bullet stuff in a box of 550).

You might have to spend a few bucks finding out, but there will be at least one kind of cheap bulk ammo it will like.:)

Every gun will have it likes and dislikes, even between the same model. Get a couple of boxes or a brick of whatever crosses your path and try it out. The gun will tell you what it likes in terms of function and accuracy/precision. Most of the 10/22s I have didn't like Rem Thunderbolts, though a couple fed them fine out of the box. All liked Fed and Win of all types. (I've only fed round solid and round hollow point profiles through mine. Never tried truncated cone or shot.) Choices decrease when you drop in the target barrels.

For plinking, both of our 10/22's like American Eagle. Maybe one FTF out of evey brick, but at $10.00/400 I can live with that.

For hunting, I like CCI Velociters. My bone stock, stainless 10/22 with 4x Leupold will give me a nice minute of squirrel group @ 100 yards and those rounds are certainly potent enough for clean kills.

I would start out with CCI Mini-Mag.

good point. mine did terrible starting out with the federal bulk 550 crap. that ammo is about as inconsistent as it gets.

YMMV.

BGlaze;

Congrats! You've picked the small block Chevy of .22's. Any thing that you can think of to do to, for, or with, it has a specialty part being made to satisfy your need. Go to: www.midwayusa.com & put 10/22 in search & get ready to have your jaw dropped. Volquartsen, Power Custom, Clark, all the names are there. Wanna make it look like a WWII German MG? Can be done. Want to shoot the left eye off the gnat? Getcher wallet full & order away.

To answer your original question though; as has been stated, try as many different types & brands of ammo as you can lay hands upon. I've got a couple that really like Winchester PowerPoints. Alas, that stuff's damn hard to get these days.

Good luck & have fun!

Chipp, IIRC, The manual for my Ruger 10/22 specifically says not to use CCI Stingers. Some chambers are longer than others so approach the use of Stingers with caution.

I have a Volquartsen THM 16.5" barrel on mine and it loves to kill squirrels with Winchester PowerPoints. Yes, the gun has a mind of its own and kills squirrels at will. Evil, evil gun.

As many have already said, your best bet is to buy a 50 round box of everything and see what shoots best.

Be sure you crack it open and clean it very well.. It will be gunked up with stuff from the factory.. Then use a box of 550 or whatever costs $10 for bulk ammo, the High Velocity stuff only, doesnt matter if it shoots well or not, you just need to break it in first.. THEN find out the ammo it likes. Have fun!

Bear in mind that an aftermarket or custom barrel, or even Ruger Target models have match chambers and will have trouble with rounds that push the spec, like Stingers, and overall will feed very differently from regular plinking/hunting barrels.
