I was wondering how everybody finds there brass. I live in the country and have my range in my back yard. The problem lies in the fact that no matter how short i keep my grass mowed its a bear too find all my spent brass.I was thinking about building a backstop out of aluminum 1 in sq tubing and string a tarp in it sort of like the backstop at a ball field only on a smaller portable scale with a tarp spread on the ground. I would like to know if anybody has done this or anything like it and how well does it work. I shoot a varity of guns and buying a brass catcher for each of them is not feasible. please post any designs or ideas or sugestions.

Fish net approx. 16 to 18 inches in dia. that mounts on the bench. Piece of dowel rod inside the net the length of the net holds it open. Cost $12.00. Works great unless brass straight forward or backward.

A big folding patio or tractor umbrella upside down on the ground will catch most of it, unless your gun really scatters them all over the place. One with a cotton cover will not melt from hot brass like a nylon one.

thanks i like these ideas im just getting tired of spending more time looking for brass than shooting

I just keep an old tarp folded up by my backstop and spread it out when I shoot. It catches almost all of my brass, even from my guns that throw brass all over.

I use range blankets. Cases are hard to find in the rocks on the firing line so I lay a couple of blue range blankets on the ground and one hanging low to the ground at the divider.
I would be cautious using any material that would tend to melt or burn from a hot case.

I use a tarp, or if I'm in a position that allows it (usually shooting rifle prone or from a bench) I just stand a box up next to the ejection port.

A friend of mine has a PVC stand with a ~12x18" PVC square on top with fine netting attached. It looks like a tall butterfly net. He positions it next to the ejection port when shooting bullseye pistol. Apparently those little pieces of .32 S&W Long brass are pricey.

+1 on the tarp - I've used a blanket, but different guns throw brass to different locations - a nice 16 x 20 tarp would be easier to get more of it.

Another alternative would be to replace grass in your yard with something like rock, but cost would be greater.

You could also build a frame of pvc pipe and use a sheet or blanket held vertically to catch them and have them fall down the sheet into a nice pile

thanks for the ideas and links iv thought about using pvc and netting or a tarp

I'd need a huge tarp because I have guns that toss in different directions.
Also, when I'm doing mobile shooting drills, the brass gets strung out along my path.

Well, I got my BUBCA (http://www.bubca.com) today. Haven't tried it yet. But, the initial thoughts are (1) this thing takes awhile to set up. (2) the hinges riveted to the sides are pretty weak. It won't be long till this thing breaks.

I have some ideas for a design of my own.:)$$
