I'm getting tired of loosing brass. Our club bought the brass catcher in an ammo can. At $100 it's way over priced and very limited. Not worth much in any breeze.

I'm going to make one and am looking for ideas. Anyone have any photos of theirs that works to post?

While I don't have a photo, I do have a link. ANd I know you can find it on MidwayUSA for less.

This catches most of my brass. On a good day I get about 95+%. On a bad day or when I am freehand shooting my guns I get much less. But at least I get some even then. It can either be set on the bench next to the gun or mounted on a tripod. Make sure the tripod is a sturdy one though. If it is a flimsy one a gust of wind can flip it right over.

search for my posts on the topic in the rifle forum. you'll find a few threads where folks made their own. some are pretty cool

Try a wooden frame, as large as you like, and drape a tarp inside, with the tarp a bit longer than the top-to-floor dimensions, so it forms a bight at the bottom to catch the brass.

My brother made us a frame out of PVC pipe stretch netting over that and attach it with tie straps, you can make it so it breaks down in two parts then all you need is a couple of adjustable quick clamps to clamp it down to the shooting bench.

I took a large 15 inch fish landing net, cost $12, with a 4' wooden handle. cut approx. 16 " off the end of the handle. This goes inside the net holding it open. Next I had a short piece of 2 x 4 about 12 to whatever inches long, drilled a slip fit hole approx 3" from the end for the handle of the net. Also make a saw cut from end of 2 x 4 to the net handle hole, cross drill a hole for a carrage bolt with a wing nut to pinch the net handle together. Last item needed was a clanp to attach to shooting bench. Hope this is clear, would post a picture if I knew how. Anyway this works great as long as there benches where you shoot.

A cheap upside down beach or patio umbrella in the right place will catch most of them if your gun throws them fairly consistently.

I have the best 2 brass catchers money can buy. One is 9 years old the other is 15. When they call a sieze fire. they sweep all the brass and get all our brass in our own bucket. The best part about it is we usually leave with more than we brought the down side. there is more for me to size and reload.

i need to make one as well, but i think what i need is a brass deflector more than a catcher. i need it for my kel-tec p3at. it spews brass in every direction over about a 15' circle. rediculous. everything else i own, at least piles them in a general direction. that is all i really need. i am going to try to make one that fits on my wrist, like a bowling brace, so i can still see the sights and shoot. when i get it done, i will post a photo, but with all the irons i have in the fire, dont hold your breath.

I made one.

Here's what I put together today. I used some landscaping net, but suspect it will be to stiff. On the plus side wind doesn't seem to bother it. I'll be trying it Sunday.

Seriously, I have rapidly developing degeneration of my lower spine and left hip joint.

If I don't have someone to pick up the brass I use one of those gadgets with the pistol grip and jaws.

So, I am looking at something for my AR, MAS and CETME. Sorta like hang-on devices.

The semi auto pistols is still up in the air as to what to do about that brass.

range report

Well guys, I'm on the right track. The adjustable stand worked great. The wind did not bother the anything due to the 3/8" square openings in the mesh. The angle towards the shooter appears to work well. I was using it with my XD45 and they went in well. This configuration should work well off our benches for rifle shooting off bags.

What I need to do now is add more pipe to create an upside down pyramid. Basically angle the mesh out away from the opening. The cases now hit the angled mesh and fall on the ground at my feet. Look's like a project for one evening this week. Another 100 tiewarps and I'll get there.

I use an old terry towel for my ARs. Cut it so it narrows in the middle to fit through the carry handle and hangs over the ejection port. Brass hits it and lands in a neat little pile.
