On a trip to visit my family, my brother in law kindly took me and my nephew (his son) on a shooting excursion on some family land. After a noisy couple of hours, the last gun I shot that day was his 12 gauge Remington Coach Gun. (I don't know the model, but it was a side by side with open hammers).

Here is my question, are there any currently manufactured break action shotguns (side by side or over and under) that throw the shells out when you break open the action.

Another related question is, can a gunsmith add this feature to an existing shotgun. (Most break action models I've encountered, including this Remington, do not throw the empty cases out, the simply raise the cases out of the chambers so that you can extract them with your fingers).

There are many, new and old, break opens that eject the shells. In fact, most newer ones eject and are often modified to only extract so they can be used in cowboy action games.

It may be possible to convert an extracting model to an ejecting one but it would depend on the design of the gun.

I did not know that, good information thank you.

Can you think of any brand names for the newer ones? I've been looking at the Stoeger website, but I cannot tell if the models are "ejecting" or "extracting."

As far as I know, all of the new Stogers and Baikals have ejectors, many old Stevens also. If you want a single shot, NEF/H&Rs have ejectors; when I was younger I would load my 20ga, shoot at a clay, open, load another and shoot the empty before it hit the ground. I cannot, off the top of my head, think of an over under that doesn't have ejectors or at least the option.

The current listing for the Stoeger Uplander says: "All models of Stoeger Uplander side-by-sides come standard with extractors."

The Coach Guns aren't specified, but are bound to be plain extractor guns because their market in Cowboy shooting does not allow ejectors.

The Condor O/Us are described: "The Stoeger Condor Supreme comes with auto-ejectors for quick ejection of empty hulls and faster reloading. (The Stoeger Condor Field Combo comes with extractors.)"

Some CZs have ejectors, some have extractors, it can take careful reading of the catalog to tell which is which.

Oh, by the way, a Remington double with exposed hammers was made not later than 1909.
Looks like about an even chance as to whether it has steel or Damascus barrels.
I don't know, but you and the family shooters should.

The baikal does have ejectors, and they are selectable. I have one, and I prefer to disable them. It's easier to pluck than to bend over and pick up. It's a simple turn of a screw; when the slot in the screw is perpendicular to the deelybob that cocks the ejector, they toss. When it is lined up, no cocking, no tossing.

I have a 20 ga Stoger Uplanded that has extractors. Mine is the Combo gun so you could say the 12 and 28 ga have extractors also Personally I like the extractor as you can pocket your hulls and not leave fodder all over the countryside.
My 12 ga Mossberg pump ejects though.
Most CAS guns are extractors in fact I think it's in the rules.

If you get a Stoeger, go with extractors. If it's cheap, keep it simple. The plain Uplanders have a fair reputation. The Supremes with the single trigger have had lots of problems.

As mentioned above, most modern guns have ejectors - that would include Browning, Beretta, all Spanish SxS guns like AyA, Arrietta, the myriad of other Italian makers, etc. Some of the cheaper (quality and price point) guns from Brazil, Philippines, etc., may not. Each description should say either extractors, ejectors, or -in the case where you can switch back and forth - extractor/ejectors
