Has anyone used Breakthrough to clean a black J-frame? I've read about that particular solvent causing issues with some black finishes (Dan Wessons, if I recall correctly). Just want to make sure I don't cause any issues before I clean my M&P 340.

I have used Breakfree CLP, Hoppes #9 and M7Pro on miy 442 over the years and it looks fine

I have used Breakfree CLP on the outside of this Smith & Wesson Model 37 Airweight for many years. No problems as it makes cleanup of powder residue so easy. IMG_E2669.JPG

I have not heard of or tried Breakthrough. At first I thought you meant Break Free CLP.
I would err on the side of caution if you do not hear that Breakthrough is okay to use and not use it for that particular gun.

Is this the product you’re asking about?

That’s the one! It works well on my other firearms. I used to use Hoppe’s Elite, but the last time I went to buy it, I couldn’t find it anywhere.

Some types of penetrating oils are known to attack a blued finish if applied heavily and left to sit.

I'm not familiar with Breakthrough, but they appear to have several different products, both lubricants and solvents. I'm afraid this may be a instance of having to carefully read the manufacturer's label.

I have been using Breakthrough gun oil for about 3 years now. In fact, I order it a gallon at a time. I have used it on blue, stainless, aluminum and polymer. Never had a problem and very good results. I have not used any of their solvents. I just stick with the tried and true Hoppies #9. I started using breakthrough gun oil because I could no longer find Rigg gun oil. I believe the Breakthrough is just as good.

I know Hoppes #9 ate right though the clear coat of my old 642. Smith refinished it and I was extremely careful cleaning the gun. Even used a dedicated brush so no Hoppes on it. Don’t remember what I used next but it ate the finish again.

I've used plain, old Hoppes #9 for as long as I've been shooting; never had it harm the finish on anything, blued, anodized, or nickeled. The only caveat I've ever heard regarding Hoppes was not to leave it wet on nickel; if there is a scratch, it will attack the copper that is under the nickel.
Never found the finish on alloy frame Smiths to be terribly durable; always wears on the high spots.

I have not used it but Breakthrough Cleaner is advertised as a military-grade cleaning solution only. It is not a lubricant, it is not a protectant, it does one job well: Breakthrough Cleaner cleans metal parts and is supposed to be very vigorous at that job.

It is not a cleaner-lubricant-protectant like classic Three-In-One or BreakFree CLP or a cleaner-protectant like WD40.
