Bridging the gap: .223 to 7mm Rem Mag

I have a 6.5 Grendel. It is an AR, but I bring it up in regards to the round, you say 80-120gr. The Grendel is phenomenal with the 100gr. AMAX at 2800fps. Like a laser beam to 200m, I haven't had it past that yet, not able yet. I got a 1/2MOA group by the 85th round... Still working up loads, I expect it is capable of 1/4MOA. I've got about 200 rounds down the tube and I'm getting 1MOA or less with 123gr. SMK's, but so far I've had the best luck with the 100gr. AMAX. Less BC, but under 300m, the extra velocity of the 100gr. bullet may be the reason it is more accurate, that or perhaps I'm just lucky with the AMAX --like I say, it is still new and I'm working with new loads. It hits plates WAY harder than a 5.56mm with M855 or Mk262 clones by the way.

I can only dream of what this round is capable of in a bolt action. It is a great round for in between --not quite the performance of the .260, but much shorter and less recoil. The very few folks that I have heard that shoot it in a bolt speak of amazing accuracy.

Great round for handloading too. The brass is good, choice between Lapua or Hornady. I like the Lapua, and Alexander Arms has it on sale now and again for a good deal. Their headstamp is actually Lapua brass too. $55 per 100 ain't bad at all! Not in this round.

This round has already become my favorite by far in the AR. It surpasses the 5.56mm in every way, and the 7.62mm in some ways, particularly at very long range. This round works well with most barrel lengths, the pistols have three or four times the energy of the 5.56mm I think, and the 14.5" barrels are just great. I have a 20" and it is great, but you don't gain much after 16" or so, and 24" is about max. I build my own AR's, and I just built an M4 like I had in the Army, but the next rifles I build will be 6.5 from now on. It is that good.

If you want something to bridge a gap between a 5.5mm and 7mm, well, 6.5mm does like in there. If you want something big like 7mm, then I'd say one of those big 6.5mm's, like the .260 or the Lapua or Creedmore. If you want something small and light, more like a 5.56mm rifle, then I'd say the Grendel for sure.

OK, it's gonna be a 25-06. Now to sort out which rifle. I'm looking at Ruger, CZ, Browning, Savage, Tikka, maybe Winchester. Did I miss any?

Would like to keep price below $700 so I properly can scope it and still be under a grand. Acquiring a fine pre-loved rifle with a reasonable round count is in play.

Thanks for all the advice.

Thanks, AP. I have a great old A-Bolt, and it's the main reason why Browning is on my list. But I should have said I also want walnut and blued steel. Another hardwood or laminate would do if walnut puts me too far out of price range.
