Anyone considering getting into new calibers...

Several years ago I had a real nice older Remington 700 ADL in 30-06 , I gave it to one of my son in laws then about two weeks later my Daughter dumped him.

I've been keeping my eye out for a replacement

So I was being only semi-facetious about getting into new calibers as a result of the ammunition "shortages." Trying to keep things light-hearted, surprised someone would think this is "short-sighted." I asked, has the current situation made anyone consider buying a rifle in some of the less popular chamberings? Certainly there are worse reasons to buy a new rifle.

But, I've been on a rifle-buying kick the past year or so (have mostly al the handguns I need or want) and due to the silliness, have revisited some calibers I formerly never considered. So, in doing a bit of research, I'm learning a lot more about what I'd considered the more obscure chamberings, and finding out things that interest me.

Not solely the more popular ammo supply drying up, but it has swayed me into looking at different cartridges that I might not have otherwise... I have the disposable income to burn, and am desiring to have a lot of options to play with after I retire.

I have been looking at a few new to me calibers lately, mostly because I like playing with guns. I ended up on a rifle kick after selling off a lot of unused ar15 rifle and pistols, picking bolt or single shots I've had my eyes put for over the last few years. Bought a 280 Remington, havent had a 7mm in at least ten years. Also bought a 45-70, been 8 years since my last foray into that cartridge. But I have reloading supplies for both, so I just needed to get brass to get shooting...

based on what ammunition they're seeing still on the shelves?

(Inspired by army_eod's thread ".257 Wby")

I keep finding myself looking at new rifles in calibers such as .257 Weatherby or .246 Win Mag, .25-06, .22-250, .257 Roberts, 7mm Rem Mag, or whatever ammo I'm seeing left on the shelves in Sportsman's Warehouse and my LGS.

I almost picked up a new .243 because there seemed to be quite a bit of that out there, but it's gone now. So I've had the urge to buy a new rifle, but only if I can pick up a bunch of ammo for it...

Son went to our local Sportsman's Warehouse both this last Sat and Sun and bought 223 both days. Also 9mm and 38Spec..2 salespeople, one at SW and another at Jax both said they are seeing better availability from ammo suppliers..we'll see, but this is temporary..just how long, who knows.

BUT, I'd buy a new whatever cuz I'd want that whatever, for whatever reason, even if 'just cuz'...BUT I wouldn't base a buying decision or most any decision based on 2020/2021...ammo availability.

Kind of opposite thinking for me. All of my guns, shotgun excluded, are in .223, 45(LC), or .380ACP.
I have a good stockpile of each of the calibers and plenty of 20 gauge shells.
I don't want to spend my ammo money in every direction and have to worry about having enough of this or that.

I suppose if I was younger and had my eye some hunting trips or other things that my attitude would be different.

Yeah I’m thinking of a few now.

Oh and I’ve been toying with the idea of an 8mm
If I were rich and had unlimited time I’d want to play around with a 6mm-06

Not me. I added a couple of rifles (and plenty of components) in 6.5 PRC and .280 Ackley fairly recently, because of my interest in the cartridges--not because I saw ammo on the shelf. The only other cartridge I'm interested in is 6mm Creedmoor, but that's not going to happen until I shoot out one of my .243 / .243 AIs. And then I won't buy a new rifle; just rebarrel the one that's shot out.
