The last time this happened in VT it caused a fatality and jail time for the shooter. Be safe, take care, and know what is beyond your target!:(

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS • SATURDAY, AUGUST 14, 2010

BRIDPORT — Addison County prosecutors are deciding what charges, if any, to bring against a man accused of shooting a Bridport man in the victim’s backyard.

Vermont State Police say 76-year-old Peter Damone was in his yard Friday night when he was hit by a bullet fired by a man who was target shooting some distance away.

The victim was able to summon his wife, who then called Vermont State Police in New Haven. Two neighbors also provided assistance in moving Damone out of the area.

Rescue responded and transported Damone to Porter Hospital in Middlebury. He was evaluated there and then transported to Fletcher Allen Medical Center in Burlington, where he was in stable condition as of Saturday morning.

Police have not released the name of the man accused of firing the shot.
The Vermont State Police, aided by Vermont Fish and Game Wardens, are conducting the investigation. This is an ongoing investigation and further releases are forthcoming as the investigation continues. The Addison County States Attorneys Office will review this case and decide what charges may be filed.

I am waiting to see how far away the shooter was and was he at a Range. When Brems are properly made and maintained you could have a shooting range next door to a kindergarden with no issues.

Morons! They will be the death of shooting sports!

I can recall the last accidental and fatal down range incident I read. In Sept 2008, John Reiss, a 73-year-old English professor was eating dinner with his wife, Sheila, when a stray bullet came through this house and into his heart.

If a person can’t garden, eat dinner at their table, play with their kids peacefully and safely, because some stupid idiot is shooting downrange, things are going to change.

Pontificate about rights, justice and the law, but society will find a way to erase those who are too dangerous, or are just a bloody nuisance.

Bottom line? The shooter failed to assure that what ever was behind his target was safe to shoot at.

Or, it could be a failed attempt at murder...

This is the sort of safety-issue thing about which we're regularly griping. Just another dot on the curve, unfortunately. But, not much to discuss beyond what's been said many times...
