Shooters seek handgun law change

Three Olympic shooting events are illegal in Britain

The government has been urged to relax gun laws which make it illegal for Britain's top pistol shooters to train in England, Scotland and Wales.

Home Secretary Charles Clarke has given special permission for pistol events to be staged at the London 2012 Olympics.

But British team members face having to do all their 2012 preparations abroad.

"It would be fantastic if they were given the ability to compete on a level playing field," said British shooting's performance chief John Leighton-Dyson.

"I would like to think reasonable people will be able to have reasonable discussions and come to reasonable conclusions about this."

Laws banning most types of handguns were introduced after gun enthusiast Thomas Hamilton killed 16 schoolchildren and their teacher at Dunblane Primary School in March 1996.

As a result, British shooters who compete in the rapid fire, 50m pistol men and 25m pistol women Olympic events can only train in Northern Ireland, the Channel Islands or Isle of Man.

Team members currently spend about 20 to 30 days a year training in Switzerland, and receive no funding because their events are illegal in the UK.

The Home Office agreed to relax the law so the three events can be staged in 2012, as it did for the 2002 Commonwealth Games events, although stringent security measures will still be required.

But the government's current stance is that there will be no further concessions for training in the build-up to the Games.

Japan, which has similar gun laws to Britain, gives its elite pistol shooters a special exemption.

And Leighton-Dyson is keen to set up talks with the government, the British Olympic Association and London's organising committee in an attempt to broker a similar compromise.

"It is very difficult for us to get young people to come into a sport they can't practise domestically," he told BBC Sport.

"The British team in 2012 will be the biggest we can possibly put out because we are playing at home.

"We must be allowed to train and prepare on the same level as other athletes if we are to have a reasonable chance of competing effectively."

The International Olympic Committee has received letters from various parties since London won hosting rights for 2012 asking it to push for changes in Britain's gun laws.

But IOC spokeswoman Giselle Davies said: "We are totally comfortable with what has been put in place for Games time."

A Home Office spokesperson said the laws had been voted in by an "overwhelming majority" of MPs.

"The banning of handguns wasn't a matter of eroding personal freedoms, it was a matter of ensuring that what had been shown to be a terrible, if statistically small, risk was removed," she said.

What idiots Labour be.

At leas the Conservatives never banned .22 target pistols.

It wa Labour that came in and did that (Tony Blair)

They shouldn't hold the Olympics there. From the article, they are worried about incidents which are terrible, but statistically unlikely. Well, there is a very statistically unlikely chance that an Olympic shooter who is attending the 2012 Olympics will get Silver instead of Gold and freak out and cause a terrible incident in which he empties all five rounds from his 22 Short Olympic pistol into innocent bystanders. Yes, such a thing has never happened before and is statistically unlikely, but it's so terrible that they should just not have the Olympics in the UK.

They should also not have the shot put, javelin toss, discus, or synchronized swimming. I'm not really sure what the risks are of synchronized swimming, but I'm sure there is some risk of something terrible happening, like maybe the Loch Ness monster coming out of the swimming pool and munching on innocent bystanders.

Oh yeah, and if they do have the Olympics in London, there will be a lot of people attending from all over the world, including people who have a swarthy complexion and wear jackets on the Underground, and there's some statistical chance that something terrible will be inflicted on them by gun-toting bobbies with itch trigger fingers.

Why did we bother to save England from the Nazis? I think the English would have been happier as serfs in a Nazi puppet state.

Boy, the more you watch the English lately, the more you wonder.

I never believed that your typical Englishman is as big a supporter of the US as we're told. They are not citizens, they're subjects. They can only really watch as their government does things to them.

My Dad said that the Dutch and German civilians were much friendlier than the French and English during the big one.

Never really thought much of 'em past their high quality spec ops lads. New York City is cleaner and safer than London, and the English let themselves be treated like slaves. The ones with guts came over here.

(Disclaimer: I'm first gen Irish-American...there's some unhealthy family history there.)

I'm just curious:

How does one BECOME an elite shooter, if you can't use firearms until you ARE an elite shooter?

Practice with airsoft?

And, an off topic question:
not really sure what the risks are of synchronized swimming
If one synchronized swimmer drowns, does the team lose points if they don't all drown at the same time?

They should also not have the shot put, javelin toss, discus, or synchronized swimming.

You forgot fencing. Kind of a paintball version of sword fighting. And what about boxing? My god man, those guys are trying to HIT each other ON PURPOSE!! :what: Ohhh the horror!

"I would like to think reasonable people will be able to have reasonable discussions and come to reasonable conclusions about this."

Good luck with that. Can there be any doubt that the purpose of those "reasonable restrictions" is to eridicate shooting? Imagine if by law only "elite" basketball players could play basketball. How long would that game last?

IIRC, the Olympics were orginally tests of warriors and their warfighting skills. (Javelin, Shot-put, fencing, discus, etc).......

Now it's events like synchronized swimming.

The wussification of humanity continues......

Yes, Janitor is right. They do practice with airsofts and I think also pellet guns. Then they compete to see who is best, go through tons of paperwork and waiting lists, and finally a couple dozen of them do get the honor of owning handguns. Actually they have some excellent shooters. I read about some Japanese who came to the US and WON an IPSC-type match. He had never shot a real gun before coming here. Just lots of airsoft.

It makes sense. You learn good habits and you learn not to flinch, and you can practice a lot more because you don't need to go to a range. And the Japanese tend to do things to perfection.

All around Asia there are shooting ranges set up for Japanese (and Taiwanese, etc) tourists. In Honolulu, Guam, Cambodia, etc. I think a lot of Japanese, Taiwanese, Brit, etc, shooters do in fact spend a lot of time practicing outside of their countries. A shame.

I wish there were some way to help them fix their laws at least a little bit. A victory for gun owners anywhere is a victory for all, and a defeat anywhere is a defeat for all.
