I know it's not fair to judge by a single photo, and fashion taste is not anywhere near my specialty--but did anyone look closely at the photo of the journalist in question in the link provided by distortion9? (only speaking of the seeming lack of modesty--not intending to comment on the lady's attractivness).

For some reason, I had the impression that she believed that the streets were safe and went to prove herself correct? I may have read that completely wrong though. The show was supposed to air this evening (their time) so maybe a vid tomorrow?

Anyway...comments from her fellow Brits.

Crime is down. The streets have never ever been safer thanks to New Labour's tough on crime, tough on the causes of crime promise.

- Jacqui Smith, UK

That's one way to get rid of the BBC!

- Kim, Hampshire UK

The legacy of a failed Prime Minister of ten years and a usurper who followed him into office with no better ideas. Our great loss.

- Mike, Coventry

Welcome to England - under Nu Labour.

- We'Re Doomed, England

Sadly this is probably representative of many of our cities and large towns. But Jacqui says we are safer now than ever, and Jack wants to keep more and more out of prison - ivory towers spring to mind.

- Mick, Middlesbrough

What a wonderful place government has created for our children and grandchildren, no wonder people are leaving in droves.

- Lindy Wilson, Mersin 10, Turkey

Tough on crime, tough on the cuases of crime? NOT.

I think that this says it all.

- Weejonnie, Co Durham

No problem, no one was hurt. Besides, crime figures are down according to this government...

- Algenon Beaker, Devon

Capital of culture? There's more culture in a pot of yogurt.

- David Kendall, St Helens

Shelagh welcome to Nu Labour's la-la land.

- Andy, UK

She is part of the Liberal Elite BBC types that have caused this problem.

Now there is no where left to run they might start to realise what normal English people have known for years.

Your social experiment has failed.

- Mark Greenwood, London

She must be imagining it, our leaders tell us, this does not happen and crime is down. It's all under control. We should get the army to patrol these streets, and see how these thugs like a taste of their own medicine.

- M Harrington, Hitchin, Herts

Welcome to NuLabor's Grate Britain.

- Eagle Eye, UK

Since stringent gun control has not prevented such incidents, when I am elected King of England I will put a stop to them by making it illegal for honest people to go into the streets.

They need to stay in their homes where they belong so they can be attacked by hard working burglars who have rights too.

And some say crime is down in the UK! And if the report was faked, was it to promote further legislation, or just sensationalism that leads to legislation?

Oh, the humanity!

Do the words good, prudent, and common sense come to mind at all? I read the statement that the Home Secretary Jacqui Smith said that she would not go out at night by herself. Any intelligent human being would not go out by themself late at night in a big city whether the neighborhoods are good or bad unless they had to. If I did I most certainly would be armed (where legal/applicable etc.).

Like everyone else has said, this report is nothing but sensationalism and yellow journalism. Anybody that dresses in moderately nice clothes, walks around with expensive cameras and/or electronics, and stands on the right street corner will certainly meet someone of ill repute. It makes about as much sense as leaving your car door open in a Walmart parking lot with the keys in the ignition. You can certainly do it, but why in the world would you? We all know that there is crime out there with no shortage of criminals to fill the shoes of those who are arrested. A lock will only keep an honest man honest by removing his temptation of an easy crime. Decent common sense will do the same. You cannot individually prevent crime, but you can make it harder for the criminals.

Gun control does not prevent violence. Truthfully, I do not even like the words "gun violence". That statement implies that guns spontaneously eruptic in extreme episodes of violence. So far none of my firearms have hurt anybody that I know of.

Violence is caused by criminals or by individuals that are unstable. They will use whatever tools are available and will do the best job. Eons ago it was a club or fists. 500 years ago it was a sword or dagger. 300 years ago it was a flintlock rifle or knife. 130 years ago it was a lever action rifle or SA revolver. 50 years ago it was a pump shotgun or DA revolver. Today it is a semi-auto or full auto of some kind.

Big Brother cameras and a gun ban too! You'd think everything would be perfectly safe after enacting those two things.
She seems surprised when they don't too. Man, are people brainwashed.

Ah, Liverpool. I remember working on a council estate there in the 80s. We were there 20 minutes and the rascals stole all of our ladders. In certian areas of Liverpool crime is a way of life. We had to bring some heavy boys with us just to protect our plant while we worked. Don't sound like its changed much.

There are no guns in Airstrip One, and Eastasia has always been at war with Oceania.

reading that right now in school as a matter of fact.

this lady has to be wrong, there can't be guns in London, its a gun free zone

She said on her breakfast show: "I had quite a horrible, and difficult weekend really."

"I was in Liverpool filming a programme regarding Jacqui Smith's comments about not feeling safe on the streets on her own and testing out the theory really with how other people felt."
Well; we can surmise that Shelagh "found out"
Shelagh said: "I never thought I would have a gun pointed in my face and never thought that would happen just five minutes from the place I went to school."
And that she currently - like many others - leads a somewhat sheltered life.

Nothing that hasn't happened twenty years ago or more in cities like Liverpool. Or even in the miniscule towns like Deeside and Flint.
