Feel like I just fell off the turnip truck. Purchased a "unfired" new in box P-32 from a stranger at a gun show. Clean cut young guy who told me his uncle was a FFL who has given him the gun and he wanted something different. Paid $200 for it. (new 209+tax). saved a whopping $25. Loaded with Silvertips, trigger goes all the way to back of frame, hammer back, will not fire. No matter how hard you pull. Did not try to dryfire the gun (tied at show) but did clean and oil before I took to range with 100 round of ammo. Help--What is the problem? Does it have to go back to KelTec? Advise--How do I send it to KelTec for repair?-Will they warrent it to me without the sales receipt??? I WILL NOT put it back in the box and find a second "Sucker". also have posted this request on the KelTec forum. Any Help and Advise is appreciated. ----tom soutter, Dallas,TX

Mine did that shortly after I bought it a few years ago. It's called a broken trigger axis IIRC. I sent mine back to be fixed and haven't had any other problems.

I believe there are directions, maybe on the KTOG site, for getting the part and doing it yourself. I seem to remember that it's a little complicated, but doable.

Give KT a call and see what they say. Good luck.

I've had good luck getting a dealer to mail guns for me, but I don't do it very often either.

For immediate assistance phone Kel Tec at 1-800-515-9983. (They also have an e-mail address for technical assistance and it is: [email protected])

Even if you are not a FFL holder you can ship a gun to the manufacturer. You can use the United States Postal Service. It does not cost that much. It's wise to pay a little extra for insured mail.

The US Post Office will not mail a handgun for an American Commoner. They require a form from an FFL. If you had bought the gun from a dealer, he would probably furnish one and save about half on shipping, but since you got it from a swindler...

You can ship by FedEx or UPS. They will require you to ship a gun by air so as to reduce theft by their own employees and to increase their revenue. That is company policy, not law, but since the BATF requires that you tell the carrier that you are shipping a gun, they have pretty well got you where they want you.

At least my local FedEx agent was nice about it, the UPS office here is staffed by snots.

Some companies will send you a return form to cover shipping on warranty work, but I don't know if KelTec is one. Call and ask.

Mine did the same thing and it was an east fix... Nothing broken, there is a pin going up through the underside of the trigger that walked out. Tapped it back in, and was good to go. However, didn't exactly inspire confidence and haven't carried it since... Which leaves it pretty much useless, since it ain't really good for nothing else - certainly not particularly fun to shoot.

Rocko and all, thanks

Rocko----You are a genius.--Read your post and thought "Yeah, That will work" but ten minutes later I was dry firing the little BUG. My bad for dryfireing, but was so happy to hear that "ping". I was dreading the shipping hassle. So, thanks, and I will be calling KelTec later today to ask how far that pin should be down in the trigger. Just a quarter inch let the trigger do it's job. Thanks again. And thank you THR members for your help.---- Tom Soutter

Glad to hear that the fix was easy. Let us know what KelTec says if you contact them - I'm not really sure if the fact that the pin was able to walk out at all was an indication of another problem. I only put a single box through mine since I tapped mine back in, so I'm not sure that it won't simply just happen again - IIRC, mine did it after about 150 rounds.

Keltec seems great about taking guns back for service, but after you pay shipping once, the gun ain't such a good deal anymore, and I've heard of guys who needed to send theirs back several times. It can't be much cheaper for them to ship it back to you, either. One would think that improving their QC would be cheaper than fixing all the issues plus the return shipping, not to mention improving their rep, but who knows...

The 1968 GCA ( http://www.atf.gov/pub/fire-explo_pub/gca.htm ) makes it illegal for a common carrier to put anything on the outside of the package indicating there is a gun inside. In order to protect UPS from violating the law, I simply tell the employee at the counter it contains machine parts. I also offer them a list of the part numbers (from Kel-Tec web site) for insurance ($300) purposes. To date no employee has accepted the parts list which is headed Job Number then the pistol serial number.

Cost from Texas to Florida is about $9 and you get to UPS-track it about a week trip via ground (yes, it’s legal, read above act). If you write Kel-Tec they will reimburse you for up to $20 in shipping for warranty work. Rather than go to that trouble, I enclose a letter offering to accept an extra magazine (also $20) in lieu of shipping cost.

While your P-32 is at Kel-Tec, you can exchange your slide for a hard chrome slide for $20 if you like but this will add a couple of weeks to time-in-shop. See http://1bad69.com/keltec for details.

Better read the first paragraph in the section you are referencing re: the labeling, as it also requires you to notify them.

§ 178.31 Delivery by common or contract carrier.

(a) No person shall knowingly deliver or cause to be delivered to any common or contract carrier for transportation or shipment in interstate or foreign commerce to any person other than a licensed importer, licensed manufacturer, licensed dealer, or licensed collector, any package or other container in which there is any firearm or ammunition without written notice to the carrier that such firearm or ammunition is being transported or shipped:

Presumably listing the contents on the shipping form as a firearm satisfies the written requirement. I don't think a list of part numbers would do so.

While there is no legal requirement to go overnight, there is a legal requirement to tell them the package contains of firearm. At which point they'll likely require you to ship overnight per company policy. I've heard others say FedEx Ground allows otherwise, but it took me two trips to the local FedEx office and three calls to their corporate offices before they would ship a handgun for me, even overnight.

Oh contraire!

Please read very closely what you have posted. You have overlooked the words “OTHER THAN.†As I am shipping to a licensed manufacture I am specifically NOT required to give written notice to the carrier. Chances are some member of congress who was previously a lawyer wrote this. They just love to try to confuse the public :)

Hmmm, I guess I was reading it a bit differently as it seems silly to have a requirement for written notice for an act that would be illegal of itself. I was reading the notice part to be exclusive of the requirement that the recipient be a licensee. However, according to the ATF's online FAQ, they make that same interpretation...

(B9) May a nonlicensee ship a firearm by carrier?

A nonlicensee may ship a firearm by carrier to a resident of his or her own state or to a licensee in any state. A common or contract carrier must be
used to ship a handgun. In addition, Federal law requires that the carrier be notified that the shipment contains a firearm and prohibits common or contract
carriers from requiring or causing any label to be placed on any package indicating that it contains a firearm. [18 U. S. C. 922( a)( 2)( A) and 922( e), 27 CFR 178.31]

So... perhaps their interpretation is wrong, but it don't mean that they may not try to get you for it...

Those ATF guys are sneaky, aren’t they :) This statement never refers to the “other than†folks that are licensed but assumes both shipper and recipient are unlicensed. My mother calls this a sin of omission. “Billy, did you let the cow out!†No, Mother (I left the gate open and the cow walked out by herself)

I would never knowingly break the law (speeding excepted) but I refuse to accept intentional misleading ATF statements as fact when congress made a specific exception within the law so gun owners could have their guns repaired or upgraded. Knowing that theft would be a problem they also made it illegal for common carriers to mark the package as containing a gun. I’m only trying to abide by the letter and spirit of the 1968 GCA.

How hot a load will my P3AT handle?

Just wondering whether my 380 P3At will safely digest plus-Ps and +P+. anyone had experience? I know the .32 is graded for +P, but wonder on the P3AT.

Kel-Tec recommends that Cor-Bon it not be used as a steady diet. In addition to Cor-Bon I frequently practice with Sata Barbara (inexpensive surplus Spanish police ammo) which has equal or greater recoil. However, I do spend fifty cents to replace my recoil springs every couple of hundred rounds using hot ammo. Kel-Tec claims their recoil springs are good for 5,000 rounds but I change P-3AT springs every couple of thousand rounds even with standard ammo.

Ah yes, the walking trigger pin. One of many serious problems and defect common to the P-32. Not much can be done as it is a design flaw. The trigger axis tends as well so if you haven't had that break, maybe it will soon and you can really get to know your new P-32.

Sorry to be so sarcastic but I have been done that road and feel for you man. Keep an eye on the trigger pin because they tend to walk out a lot and sometimes they drop out and your gun is worthless. The P-32 is worthless anyway but if it is broken as well as just being a turd, you can't even get any money out of it.

Gunshows are great for people that are selling junk because of the ties that are on all the guns. You can't check the trigger or the action to see if it is working as it should. Carry some tie wraps with you so if you want to check out a gun, you can tie it back up for the seller in case you decide not to buy. If they still won't let you cut the tie, don't buy. That is my motto, "If I can't cut the tie, I don't buy"

My p32 came up with the same symptoms once... 'cept in my case it was the little nub at the top of the trigger that engages the trigger bar - cracked right off. Took the opportunity to ask them to rebuildit onto a green frame.

I am a self professed hot loader of small carry pistols.
In my 1903 380 I shoot loads with more powder than the max load for 357 mag, and with the shorter over all length, I get a 380 much faster and higher pressure than a 357 mag.
But the KEL-TEC P3AT is something else again.
It has worse case support than 40sw Glock and thinner chamber walls than a CZ52 and the lightest slide, barrel, and recoil springs around.

In short, it is a terrible candidate for hot loads.

Normally, I overload until I see case bulges, and then back off.
In my carry loads for the P3AT, there is always some case bulge if the loads are above book loads.
And I can't even get the power up to 9mm regular:(
With the the short barrel, my hot loads barely get up to 380 factory ammo in an average length barrel:(
Why put up with all this wimpiness?
Because it weighs 10 ounces loaded:)

Here are my load notes:
My Kel-Tec P3AT .380
2.76" barrel, 90 gr. Speer Gold Dot bullet, 6.2 gr. Power Pistol, .970", heavy crimp, some cases get guppy belly bulge, mixed used brass,
1095, 1115, 1098, 1054, 1093 fps
Brass bounced off the wall and cut my forehead.
